Scouting report

Hi,

Speckmisser sent me over here because Hawk1 had just scouted Payne Ranch. It is listed in Blacktail hunt'n mag this issue and I was thinking of doing a little scouting for the archery opener in July (yes, I know, hot as hades). Figured While I'm scouting for deer, may as well carry the rifle if there are pigs around. I was going to head up in May or June for a scouting trip/camping weekend/pig hunt (if there are any). Anyone have any info on this area??

Just did a search and found out most of what I was lookng for. You'd think by know I would know the process.....

I personally haven't seen any hogs there. A few signs off-trail, but very old. Good population of deer though (as far as public land is concerned). Have even seen elk in that general area.

Most of what I've heard about Payne, from those that have actually seen hogs, say they're mostly passers-through.

My guess is that the private nooks to the north and east have more of what the hogs want.

Hey shag,
Do not rule out Camp Roberts to hunt. I've taken a lot of nice deer out of there. And I have seen 120 plus P&Y animals on base. And we have a archery only hunt in July. And plus we have a ton of hogs along the river in july. And the great thing is, that last year we only had 12 hunters openning day of archery, and it only cost $15.00 a day to hunt.

No it is open to the public. There is a thread on camp roberts with all the hunt info, I will look for it.
