Off work in the AM, then hauling up to Alturas for my first scouting trip before the Northeastern opener. This trip is more to just familiarize myself with the area I'll be hunting. I'll focus more on targeting animals next trip. Hopefully I'll make it up there at least a couple more times before the season. Just over 2.5 months out.. I'm pumped!

Some huge bulls up there. How many days will you be able to hunt consecutively when the season opens?

Interesting, typically people start asking for everyones secret spots a week before the opener. Good job for getting out there and doing it.

If I schedule it right, I'll have 9 consecutive days to hunt and 2 days prior.

Bring your fishing pole and trout gear. Check out the Blue Lake area east of Likely. I hunted deer there a few years ago and wish I had an elk tag.

Spent the last 2.5 days figuring out the area. Didn't bring the camera. Only pictures I have are on my phone and they're not good quality. Spent most of the time just driving and orienting myself on the map. Also figuring out which roads dead end after traveling down them for 2.5 hours. Did a little more looking on the last day. Found some areas with fresh sign, but didn't turn up any animals. There's so many small reservoirs and water holes, its hard to figure out which ones they frequent. I'll be back though. Next time I will have more of an area-specific approach. Had a good time.. its going to be fun, come September.

I work in the McCloud, Burney, Pondosa area. When it gets closer let me know if you are still looking at new areas. I usually start really seeing them about late August as they start thinking about the rut.
