I'll try to make this short. Because I've had some success on public land (DIY), I've gotten many emails from fellow hunters - which is cool. I mostly reply with a similar message: look for cover, water, food source, sign - and put in lots of time and effort. Two weeks ago (Sat.), I spent eight hours in the field, 5 1/2 of which were spent hiking - and it was not easy hiking. Then on the following Sunday I spent a little over three hours hiking, again, not easy hiking. This past weekend I went to retrieve the three trail cameras I left out. Some mixed news: I did get a wild hog(s), on public land in San Diego county - a real nice sow, but she had, what looks like, five tiny piglets with her. Now I know I could kill this sow with my bow (sows with piglets are probably the easiest to kill) in the next couple of weeks, but I won't do that (that would mean the demise of the 5 piglets). But here's the thing: there will be at least seven huntable wild hogs in SD county very soon - the healthy sow, her grown-up offspring, and I think we can say with some certainty, a boar. Fellas, don't give up, they're out there - you just gotta get after it. Hopefully I'll be able to update this thread in the near future with the dead boar (which is gonna be very, very difficult because those lone boars are incredibly elusive), or in the not-to-distant future with a good-sized dead sow, or one of the grown up piggies.
