I'll try to make this short. Because I've had some success on public land (DIY), I've gotten many emails from fellow hunters - which is cool. I mostly reply with a similar message: look for cover, water, food source, sign - and put in lots of time and effort. Two weeks ago (Sat.), I spent eight hours in the field, 5 1/2 of which were spent hiking - and it was not easy hiking. Then on the following Sunday I spent a little over three hours hiking, again, not easy hiking. This past weekend I went to retrieve the three trail cameras I left out. Some mixed news: I did get a wild hog(s), on public land in San Diego county - a real nice sow, but she had, what looks like, five tiny piglets with her. Now I know I could kill this sow with my bow (sows with piglets are probably the easiest to kill) in the next couple of weeks, but I won't do that (that would mean the demise of the 5 piglets). But here's the thing: there will be at least seven huntable wild hogs in SD county very soon - the healthy sow, her grown-up offspring, and I think we can say with some certainty, a boar. Fellas, don't give up, they're out there - you just gotta get after it. Hopefully I'll be able to update this thread in the near future with the dead boar (which is gonna be very, very difficult because those lone boars are incredibly elusive), or in the not-to-distant future with a good-sized dead sow, or one of the grown up piggies.

Wild1,

Great post. Gets me fired up for the post upland season. Nice pics also on the DIY. Slow down you have harvested about half the counts from SD county the last couple of years!###

Thanks for sharing and thank you for being ethical. I have seen too many wet sows taken over the years. It always amazes me how many people ask and expect coordinates. Sounds like even if you posted them 99% of the trolls would never go that far from the road.

Good job. Now if we could just get some in the OC CNF area. May be there are some. Who knows.

Nice work man. I've seen some major sign out there too. I think we were in the same basic area.... As much orange as I see out there during deer season I would hate to have that the rest of the year from idiots that will shoot at anything that moves.

Wow you are too hardcore for me. I thought I could sit behind my keyboard and get some specific coordinates from you for my GPS and then maybe just maybe if I felt like it could drive up and shoot something. But since you are gonna be all mean and not share specific locations I'm just gonna have another beer until the urge to hunt goes away.

Good work by the way

I'm not saying anyone on here is an idiot but CNF looked like
Blaze orange old navy commercial this past season.

Update: In the 3/4 weekes since I started this thread, I've spent a lot of time, energy and (gas) money with not much to report (a good argument for hiring a guide). This morning I went out to retrieve a few trail cameras, but was only able to get one back, with nothing on it. But here's the thing: after I picked up one of my cameras, I began a long hike to another two spots for the other cams. On the way, I bump a deer and then the strangest thing happened: I here some branhes break and a not-so-familiar sound. I immediately stopped (it's now 9:40am) to listen, more broken branches and the deepest, lowest, loudest, most guttural GROWL you've ever heard. I'm thinking, "what the hell was that"....? Every animal went through my mind, but by the sound of branches breaking it could only be a pig, and a big one at that. This went on a little short of ten minutes, with my heart reaching new levels every second. No bow, or weapon on me (I was only planning on getting my cameras). This boar was a complete badass, he was making circles about 40 yards from me and freaking growling like nothing I've ever heard before - and I've heard a lot of hogs. Finally I got a glimpse of him for a second and he's big, bad, nasty and on public land!! I must have caught him off-guard at 9:40am and he wasn't at all happy about it and was letting me know. First time I've ever heard a wild hog warning me like this - almost ten solid minutes of wicked, guttural growling (not snorting, grunting, wheezing or squealing). Now I have to go back and get the last two cameras without bumping him out of there. Adrenaline rush for sure.....stay tuned.

Thats cool. I have had pigs come right at me through a pig tunnel while on my hands and knees with a bow that is worthless in the situation. Never had one actually try to attack. He must not have known what and where you were or he would have been long gone. Always carry a weapon, always.

You know, I always have my bow with me, but I had such a long hike and I really hadn't intended on hunting. I probably wouldn't of had a shot (maybe if I was at full draw when I did see him), but I could have at least stuck around to try and stalk him. He knew I was there alright, winded me from a little over forty yards away and he let me know about it. This one is gonna really test my hunting abilities, if he sticks around. Some more (stealthy) scouting to see if he stays in the area, and then it's game on!

Great update and outing. Sounds like you only saw him for a short period. Any idea how much that big bad boy might have weighed? Hope you harvest him and post a pic. Good luck!

P.Pointer -
Not sure on his weight, I only saw him for a split second. He certainly looked big for that second, but who knows - I'm hoping to have him on at least one, hopefully both, of the cams I've have out there for some time. If anyone is interested, I found the sound this boar had been making, which I'd never heard before. The only difference is that the one I ran into was "growling" more often and also thrashing and breaking branches more - plus it sounded louder to me. Turn up the volumne.

Update: Went back out for 6/7 miles of hiking and retrieved two trail cams that I've had out for awhile. One camera had nothing but racoons, opossums and an occasional deer. But the second camera rewarded my efforts!! Lookie what we have here - on public land! I'm sure it's the beast that tried to intimidate me with all those guttural growls. I have no idea how I'm gonna hunt him, but rest assured, it's now my mission (and I have no idea how I'd get him back to my truck without breaking my back). Tough to tell, but any guess on weight/size...?
