SD Hogs: a hunt in progress

180 to 250.... but it shouldnt be too hard if u debone and pack only the meat out...i ve done it many many times...even on 2 pigs i just did relay style on the packing out...good luck...he looks mean...be careful

As for your growling pig....i ve heard many times..only because i track alot of pigs to their bedding areas....i actually prefer them to mak noise so i can pin point where he is....its the silent ones i m scared of....but it did freak me out the 1st time i heard it

Update: (short version). Sunday evening hunt, at the right place at the right time. Big boar shows up at about 40 yards and gives me two loud growls but never comes into the shooting lane like he's supposed to. Another hog was with him, most likely the sow with the piglets. A lot of noise from her (breaking branches), but never shows herself. Saturday morning hunt, going to retrieve a trail camera around 8am, and in a ravine, boar let's me know he's here (apparently his bedding area) and growls a couple of times. I'm watching bushes move below me and get ready to draw. Finally the beast shows himself at about 30 yards, but he's basically imbedded in a bush/tree/thick growth. He's quatering hard to me, and I take a low percentage shot (just had to do it), that had no real chance of getting to him. He bails out. More noise, probably the sow, she never shows herself and disapprears. Long version includes adrenaline high, frustration, bad cut on finger, face plant in mud, more frustration, hell hike, lost arrow/broadhead/nocturnal, dirt covered and more. Boar 3 - Wild1 0. Officially my nemesis.

He seems hell bent to stay in the area even if you disturb him. You should have a good spot even after you get this guy.

lol, that's one hacked off boar. Just make sure and pick out a tree when you shoot next time. Is he winding you when he starts growling or does he hear you?

I can only imagine the PMs and emails you get over a public land hog in San Diego. :skeered: I love the line they always use in them, "I'm not asking for your honey hole but........."

When I first encountered him in person (almost three years ago), I wasn't moving, he came into my shooting lane for a brief moment, and then backed out - I ended up whacking a gnarly looking sow he was running with. My Saturday evening hunt I was also still, and he let me know he was in the area with some hair-raising growls. Sunday morning I was moving past his bedding area at about 40 yards and he let me know he wasn't very happy with two more nasty growls. I'm gonna have to give it a rest and then go back and hunt when the wind is more cooperative. You're right about the PM's (lol), I tell hunters my strategy is not very time or $ efficient. By the way, this boar, in the light of day, is not black and white, as he appears to be when on trail camera (the flash washes him out) - he's actually dark grey and black, and beastly looking. Good luck with your hunting fellas.

Wild1, Been there in the area but had done that...I would not take that pig even if I see him;dude, he's yours. What I mean about being there is I used to work the CNF as a firefighter and since had moved to other forests in my career. However Wild1 I will hunt the CNF and your area is non of my biznich and I am glad you showed the pics because if the day comes and i see the "beast" I will let him pass - you man have put forth the good effort. I just would like to see him...good story tooig-laughing:

Something must have been keeping them there. Now maybe something pushed them out. They may be back at some point or the area has the elements that will attract new ones. You are still way ahead of the thousands of people that have looked.
