Some of you may know that I don’t even own a rifle and have never taken a big game animal with anything but my bow. Last weekend I went on a bowhunt with a nice rancher I know in Monterey county. It was a tough hunt in the 105+ degree heat. For the most part the hogs had been showing themselves after dark over the last month. My first night they came in very skittish near me and were nosing the air like crazy. I had my bow ready as a smart sow came circling around to get in a better wind position. She came pretty close to me but I never got a quality still shot. She and the rest of them bolted as they got behind me.

The next day I took my first jackrabbit in the 1st pic (bow). God those things stink. During the entire trip the rancher kept tempting me to use his rifle and I stubbornly refused, saying “I’m bowhunting!”. Well on the last night they came in to the same area, only this time it was a bit later and I had a tough time seeing my sight pins. Thinking about my empty freezer I basically said, “Gimme the damn rifle!” and ended up with the fine sow below. So do I have to change my name to SdRifler?

I'd have done the same thing. Good shooting. Maybe change it for a week as penance

Sad, sad, sad. What's the world coming to? A bowyer using a rifle?

Ahh, the humanity!

So, when's the penitence BBQ?

Wow!..that snout shows she got lots of russian in her. Well done and congrats.

I remember my cheatted day..........shot a giant boar 250+ lbs. with a bow......tracked it into the thickest brush where the bow was impossible to shoot....grabbed my friend's 45-70 and finished it up.

DaMatRat,

Yes we had to find her in the morning. The yotes were kind enough to field dress her for me and stole a ham during the night. She DOES look a bit like a dog doesn't she? Or a hairless European.
