I am from Hawaii and am going to put in for a Elk tag as a group. Our group consists of 1 Oregon resident and 4 out of state. The resident in our group has some prefrence points and the out of state have never applied for a tag.
After we get our Oregon hunting license and we apply for a tag do we pay the full price of a bull tag at that point of after we are drawn? I have no problem eather way but just want to know. Also, does the resident prefrence points and/or the out of state applicants help our odds of getting drawn? In addition, if we do get drawn, if, does everyone in the group get a tag or is it a individual draw within the group? I have so many questions and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife web sight only does so much. Thanks in advance guys and gals.

Not sure if they average points, but your party is treated as nonresidents, all kicked out if your party application exceeds the nonresident quota of 5% of the tags in a hunt when your number is pulled. The guide draw pre cherry picks the already stingy nonresident quota, leaving much less than 5% of the tags left for the regular draw......

$4.50 application fee per species. Tag fees not required up front. If drawn, elk tag for non residents are $361.50 for 2010.

75% of the draw tags go to the applicants with the most preference points. The remaining 25% are issued through a random draw.

Application due mid may, drawing held in June.

Good luck!

Nope, as above. You have to buy the license to apply but only have to pay the point application fee which is something like $8 this year. If you draw, you have to buy your tag before the season. Tags can be purchased on line.

I have no problem eather way but just want to know. Also, does the resident prefrence points and/or the out of state applicants help our odds of getting drawn?

The points might help some depending on how many and where you apply. Points are averaged by party and rounded up. So if there are 5 of you in a party and he has say 3 points, then 3 divided by 5 is 0.6 which rounds to 1. But because the nonresident cap usually limits chances, it generally takes more points for a nonres to draw than a res. ODFW has the draw stats on the web by hunt choice so the thing to do is look up what units you can want to hunt and see how many points it takes. That way you can make sure you are putting in for something you have a reasonable chance of drawing. Of course 25% of tags are a random draw so there is always a chance of getting lucky.

In addition, if we do get drawn, if, does everyone in the group get a tag or is it a individual draw within the group? I have so many questions and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife web sight only does so much.

If you put in as a group, everyone in the group gets a tag if drawn.

Also in Oregon don't forget there are draw units for elk and also general seasons for elk. So if you don't draw, you can still purchase a general tag and go elk hunting in some areas.

Thanks for the help bra. All the input helps and I am starting to get a grasp on the whole thing. I'll look in to the web and find out what the areas required pref points are. An no worries bra, i give um one call. thanks for the contact info.
I think we're looking in to the south west areas. It's a long drive from Hawaii, the closer the better.
Thanks again guys. I'll be back to give a update later.

I am looking at the Tioga area and was wondering if anyone had experience in the area. It has a pretty good amount of out of state tags given but how is the hunting?

Wow the application deadline is early for OR. I am looking into doing a General season hunt on the west side. I studied for hours the statistics on their website and have a few units narrowed down and have to PM some of the OR guys on here to ask their honest opinion. I am trying to get a hunt for maybe 4 to 5 guys at the most, my dad and his retired Marine Corps friends. A couple of units had success rates at or slightly above 20%. I think that is great for a general season, on public land. Also it seems that OR has some private land that ANYONE can access. I guess it is some kind of special program the state has with land owners.

My first choice is CO, but that is getting too crowded and pricey. The 17 hour drive also gets to me when I can only get 5 days max, including drive time. Good luck and I hope you guys get drawn and perhaps get a couple.

If you applied for the Tioga unit, rifle hunt #1 (224x), you are guaranteed the tag as it under subscribes.

this will help you with the odds:

I grew up hunting the Tioga area. Tons of logging roads so access is no problem. Lots of very, very steep, very very brushy terrain. It is basically a rainforest so it's a mess in a lot of places. There are a whole bunch of elk in that area however, it's just a matter of finding them. I've taken several bulls/bucks in that unit. Tioga is a 3-point or better area for bull elk and that can be a challenge...tough enough to spot a bull but even tougher to spot him, confirm he has 3 points on a side and still have time to squeeze off a shot. It is certainly doable though.

Hawaiian,
I have hunted the Tioga unit for the last 4 years. We have hunted mainly around the Burnt Mountain Area out of Ten Mile OR with the masses. It is hard hunting, like said above, very very thick! Lots of rhododendron brush and thick young trees, but there is some good clear cuts in the unit, we have found most of the elk in the clear cuts that are about two maybe three years old.

Good Luck my friend

+1 on what Jake said. I hunted from the Umpqua side of the unit though. Find the clearcuts that aren't too old...those that still have mostly grass in them as opposed to brush. The elk will be in there grazing.

There can be a ton of pressure in that area...especially road-hunters. Most (if not all) of the clearcuts have roads running right to them. I like to try to find a deep, dark canyon fairly close to some good clearcuts and spend the day tromping around in there. The elk seem to go "hide" when the pressure is on. Good luck!

Thanks for all the input guys. I wont have anytime to scout in prep for the hunt. I will have to scout on the internet and by maps. The hunt should be fun and thats all that matters. I hope my wife has a good time and doesnt say "No more hunting". I'll do my best for success. Thanks again

Also it seems that OR has some private land that ANYONE can access. I guess it is some kind of special program the state has with land owners.
The Access and Habitat program. landowner gets some help improving habitat or planting food to keep the elk and deer out of their crops or similar stuff. They get help and funding and in return agree to allow access to hunting/fishing oif all legal game or just certain ones. Access is anywhere from a year or two during seasons to a decade or more. The state also leases some large tracts for hunting from timber companies. Not all properties are posted online, you just see a sign on a road with conditions for entry. Some don't even have signage, but that's the exception.

For November anywhere west of the Cascades I recommend the best rain-gear you can afford. Sometimes we don't see much of any rain till the week of Thanksgiving, but whenever it does come we get some real nasty storms.
