<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Pigs are tough. My brother in law shot one at about 50-70 yds with a 300 win. mag using 180 grain Core-lokts factory ammo. He hit him right in the pocket behind the shoulder. The boar stumbled and started to trot off. I hit him with my 257 and Scott hit him again with the 300. When we were skinning the brute out, the first 300 shot was imbedded between the meat and the shield[/b]

If the kid bought a lotto ticket instead of going hunting he would have won. As for the less than 270...Well, I shot a 306# hog (boar) last sunday. hit him a few inches behind and below the elbow. Didn't hit the sheild and got full penetration and recovered the bullet in the opposite leg under the skin. Was a 270, 130gr core lockt. It hit ribs on both sides. It stopped that pig hard. All he did was the flop and twist for about 10 seconds. I found bits of tissue on the ground even though there was no pass through. It is always the same story with the 243 and 270. To small for elk, too small for pigs, too small for bears. My uncle has killed probably 20 elk over 40 years never lost one all with a 243. No doubt pigs are tuff. I did see my cousin bounce a 30/30 off a pig skull at probably 30 yds and full charge and I'm pretty sure it was after my cousins blood before she got a headache. It stunned her and she stopped allowing for a follow up kill shot. Anyway, as for the quote above. If this is what happened, and I'm not doubting it as odd as it seems after hitting a large hog in the same area with a smaller round, it goes to show both sides of the "size" debate. If that 300 quoted didn't drop him when it should have by rights then that 17 probably did when it shouldn't of. It's called a fluke. If it is not illegal there then good for that kid. If the father is teaching his kid to hunt w/in the law then ok. If you have more respect for feral animals then for a lucky kid and a proud father then good for you too. For all you guys that are interested in ethical humane kills. Do you make sure you are not about to gut shoot a squirrel? I realize hogs are living creatures that deserve a certain amount of respect. I also realieze they are feral animals that cause errosion that allows for species of plants to grow that would not have otherwise, major crop damage, property damage like fences and irrigation, they eat acorns and other feed in competition with the regeneration of the trees and the animals that rightfully should be eating them, Iv'e even witnessed them eat quail eggs, etcetera, bla, bla, bla. Did I mention how prolific they are?. We will never get rid of them. I know I will take flak from you guys for it but I will take any shot I can at a pig so take yours at me. Even if it is with a 17, but I wouldn't expect to kill it. They aren't natural, are a problem, don't belong, and are detrimental to the animals that do. I don't think people fully consider that. Seems like some people give feral pigs more respect than native animals. Ie. Some people seem to take any shot they can get at a coyote no matter how impractical and think it is ok because it is a "varmit". I on the other hand have more respect for any native animal as they are a true wild animal that has a place in the chain. To me a feral pig ranks right up there with wild cats in my phesant feild, nothing more than a live target. If I thought I had a chance to kill one by throwing a rock at it I would try. To me what I am hearing is pigs have feelings too and we should kill them nicely. I say BS just kill em.

Since I was a kid my dad drilled me with one concept in hunting over and over again.
Placement, placement, placement.
Everyone knows that more game has been taken throughout the world by .22 than any other single calibre ever made. That being said. I personally never got to be that good of a shot that combined with the short shot window presented most times makes the lethal key "Placement" somewhat moot. My calibre of choice happens to be the .270 and it works for most everything in california trhat I hunt.
Loads come in a variety of weights from 100gr to 150gr with respectable MV's.
I might use a .17HMR if I were looking only for pigs 60lbs and smaller but anything else it's a varmit calibre.
Were I staring down a 300lb plus boar unless I was close and sure I could put it in his ear ................... maybe!

it is a damn sweet calibre.

I agree with the if your going to do it then DO IT mentality. When we bust hogs I crack as many as I have tags for

But even with that said I do it 98% of the time with 1 shot and I make sure its good and with the right weapon for the job.

Thats all I'm sayin, use the right tool for the job.

The whole reason I took issue with it is the story. Seems like BS to me.

I know there are tons of guys tryin to say how great the .17 is, its not all that. Its great for lil stuff but for anything worth talkin about I'll be shooting a 22-250, but thats just me.

Thats it on my part, when my boy goes out with me he will be shouldering a weapon meant to hunt big game not a plinker.

Family Tradition.. Let me clarify.. I am NOT trying to say how great of a caliber the .17 is.. I have only hunted with one a few times and was not that impressed with it at all.. Then again, it was not my gun and I was not as accurate with it as I am with my gun.. This kid might be a dead-eye with that round, who knows.. But I just hate it when other people start acting all holier-than-thou and telling a guy how to raise his kids.. This should have ended with.. "Nice shot, especially with that caliber...." rather than all the bashing...

This reminds me of a story I read about years ago, of a P.H.s son who went out one day with his .22 hornet. The boy climed up into a tree when a herd of Cape Buffalo wandered by, as soon as a bull presented itself under the tree the boy let him have it in the ear. It made for one very dead buffalo, But wasn't exacaly the brightest thing to do. And if I rember right the boy did get into trouble for the STUNT. I believe the same holds for the .17 HMR/ hog combo, It can be doneBut it doesnt mean you should go out and do it.
