This time next Friday I will be on a plane headed for Colorado and a guided Elk hunt. Busy gathering gear and crunching numbers to figure out how to get the meat home.

Heya Dave! Have a great time out there! The scenary will be fantastic with aspens and other fall colors and may the elk gods smile down on you with many bugles and shot ops--be one with the bulls but do not forget to bring one home!

Looks like the cheapest route for getting the meat home is to pack my gear in two coolers going out and then fill them with meat and FedEx them home. The airlines charge for extra baggage, overweight baggage and then another $175 charge for using dry ice.

Is there a way to get the meat frozen before coming home? It should stay pretty well frozen without the dry ice for a trip from Colorado to California. Fish from La Paz, Mexico stayed frozen on our trips.

Good luck! I hope you have lots of meat to worry about....

I brought frozen fish from Alaska in waxed cardboard boxes and it didn't thaw out. Rick may be on to something.

Either way it's a good problem to have.

If I shoot it and get it to the butcher soon enough then I probably won't need the dry ice. My worry is shooting one on the last couple days. My return flight has a 5 hour layover. I would be worried about the meat sitting somewhere in the back room of the airport for five hours.

Hey Dave , Im envious.
If you get that stuff frozen hard before you go, pack it in the ice chest, seal the lid with duct tape , you will be FINE for the flight home. Even if it slightly defrosts, deer, elk, beef is pretty forgiving as long as its packed well. I packed home a white tail boned out from missouri, half frozen in a big duffle bag . It was perfectly fine. We just spent time wraping it well in cellofane first then butcher paper.

Have a great time dave ! I want to kill some chickens with my new dog this year , maybe we can work something out. Bab's still serves a fine breakfast.
