Hideandwatch got me thinking about this with something he said about composing an image.

If you have any tips for taking better images please share them. I know a few things that might help someone else and I still have a lot to learn myself.

Here is something that is pretty easy to do, I'm sure most people already know this... but if don't: Try using The Rule of Thirds when photographing something, especially wildlife.

When you look through your viewfinder (or at the screen on the back of your digital camera) imagine a grid of nine equal rectangles and try placing the main object of your future picture where two lines intersect.

You can see in this image below that the chipmunk is too centered...

It is very easy to fix an image like the one above. With most image editing/processing software you can choose to use The Rule of Thirds when cropping an image. Just place the intersecting lines over the main object in your image and crop.

I used an 8 by 10 inch vertical/portrait crop for the image below...

See, I told ya it was easy

It doesn't apply to every image, but I like to do this whenever I can.

So share your tips... PLEASE

Here is a simple one that can make or break a photo. LIGHTING

Make sure you know where the sun is when shooting outside.

For example:

In photo (1) the sun was behind the rider and the camera was shooting into the light. In photo (2) the the sun was behind the camera and the rider was looking into the light. The second photo brings out more details of the object that the camera was focused on because of the light.
