Shot Placement Question

Hello gentlemen:

I am new to bowhunting and this is my first year bowhunting hogs(although I have hunted all my life with rifles and shotguns). I shoot a Hoyt ViperTec with a 24.5" draw length and 55 pound draw weight. I live in Columbia South Carolina and hoghunt in the Congaree Swamp.

My question is where should I aim? I will be hunting from a stand. I don't know if anyone has ever hunted in the SC Lowcountry or in a swamp, but it is very thickly brushed with catclaw briars, wax myrtle, more briars, bay, more briars....Well, y'all get the picture. A clear broadside shot will probably not be possible unless I'm on the ground and, anyhow, I don't want to try ground hunting with a bow. I'm not that good a shot.

Anyhow, (I apologize for the ramble), what is the best place to aim for from a stand?

PS. I shoot a PSE Dominator 200 with a 125 gr Thunderhead fixed blade broadhead. Copper John Dead Nuts sight, whisker Biscuit and wrist caliper release.

Hey Jen,

How's the hog hunting in that part of SC? My in-laws live in Camden, and I've often thought there should be some hogs in those swamps. I've seen one or two out in the back of pickups, but I have no idea if they were killed local or not.

Anyway, I'd recommend making sure you're clear of the shoulder blade, but other than that just think like a broadside on a deer. The lungs are in about the same place. The heart is way down low, though, and presents a trickier shot. However, from a treestand you might be able to angle one down without too much risk of a miss. Hit high, and you'll still get lungs.

Camden is only about 20 minutes from my house and actually, one of the areas I hunt is in Camden along the Wateree River. Yes, there are more hogs (and deer) in this area than you would believe possible. One of my hunting buddies killed a 300 pound hog (bow) over there a couple weeks ago. If you ever come visit your in-laws, you ought to come prepared to hunt-there is no season and no limit on hogs.
