Shot Placement ?

As for myself I have always sought out the heart lung shot as ideal, but recently read something about the high shoulder shot being better because it will take an elk down in its tracks.

Any opinions or experienced advice ?

Go for what you know!

That heart-lung shot is high-percentage and sure enough a killer. It's hard to recommend against it.

High lung/shoulder is supposed to be good because the lungs bleed down and essentially drown the animal in seconds. I know it works on deer, but haven't actually done it on an elk. On deer, there's also a real good chance of busting the spinal cord with that shot, which is what I usually do.

Works on hogs too.

I've always been a heart/lung kinda guy...but there are situations that might call for the high shoulder shot. Such was the case while I was in New Zealand this last July. We put a long tough stalk on a Stag and had to wait him out...he was bedded in some nasty thick bush. It was so nasty that the guide and I talked about the shot while we waited and we both agreed we wanted the Stag to drop where he was so we agreed on the high shoulder shot. He stood, the range was 249yds, he dropped.

4" to 6" below the spine or so ???
