didn't want to continue the thread hijack so... Navy SWO and FHL officials if shotgun slugs are not a legal how does DFG have a either sex archery/ shotgun hunt at San Luis Reservoir? hunt #497. maybe someone needs to re-investigate the regs. I hope the guys that were denied access in Oct weren't unsuccessfull due to misinformed officials. bring your regs with you guys. maybe DFG ELK can chime in on this one.

I understand the confusion, hunt 497 is not a shotgun/archery hunt but those are the only weapons allowed on the wildlife area in that zone. There is a regulation (do not remember off the top of my head) that allows a shotgun to be used if other weapons are not allowed (on wildlife areas or something like that). The no use of a shotgun for elk needs to be changed and it is on my list of things to correct. Shotguns with slugs are very similar to muzzleloaders so I see no real reason not to allow them.

Joe, thanks for that statement of common sense. Please let us know if/when it changes.

hunterdoug,

Although the hunters with rifles only did not have as many areas to choose from, there were several good areas available for rifle hunters through out the week (10, 12B, 20, 25 and maybe 24 if I remember correctly.) Four elk came out of area 25 and one came out of area 20 to rifle hunters on the first weekend. I don't know the total numbers for the hunt, but I believe several more rifle hunters were able to connect throughout the week. The muzzle loader hunters had additional access to parts of 9, 13, 15 and 22. Archery hunters could also hunt the remainder of 13 and 16B. I loaned my muzzleloader to another hunter from San Diego after I filled my tag. According to him towards the end of the week, the FHL wardens "supervised" a few hunters so they could use rifles in one of the restricted weapons areas and still maintain the required safety. FHL really wants hunters to be successful and the various officials (including the base CO) did everything they could to foster that success while still carrying out the base's primary mission of military training.

Which hunt are you referring to? It's definitely not the November hunt.

thanks for the clarification joe, and navy swo I was pretty sure you guys would work with the hunters to put them in legal zones, the hunt at San Luis was confusing to me, thought shotguns were legal.
