Hadn't thought much about it, but after reading all these posts it sounds like a very good (and very wise) idea to carry a pistol. I have a Ruger Blackhawk, .45 LC, +P loads.
That's whyI like this website so much: all the good insight and knowledge from you folks with lots of experience.

Cheers,

Carl

I started out by asking a question, and making fun of Travis at the same time. I've always agreed with Rancho Loco <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
If I'm using a 30.06 and can't put it down, I deserve the ass kickin[/b]
Now I'M seriously considering buying a big handgun (I don't think my Ruger .22 really counts)!

I do love the BlackHawk's style, what's the difference in Knock down on a .41 mag, .44 mag, and .45LC+P?

Here are some rough ballistic's. Like all calibers, Different Brand and/or Size(Grains) have different specs:

.41 Mag ; 780-830 ft lbs Energy with a velocity of 1200-1250 fps

.44 Mag ; 820-860 ft lbs Enery w/ 1150-1250 fps

.45 LC ; 400 - 450 ft lbs w/ 750 - 850 fps

I like the good ol' .44 Mag.

If your recoil shy go with the .41 mag. As you can see it is close to the .44 mag in knock down power but it has 20% less recoil

Recoil doesn't bother me at all. However, my wife loves to shoot the .22 Ruger but she is petite... and I'd probably want her to be able to use it if she needed to.

If I don't tell her there's a lot of recoil, do you think she'd notice a difference between the two?

P.s. We all know there is no such thing as felt recoil when you're hunting or shooting in self defense... unless you are thinking about it!

Been eyeballing a Magnum Research BFR in 45-70 as a back up for them hogs..granted, it is a heavy bastard and has some helacious recoil..but I would feel very confident with it. Have shot a friends BFR and was pretty good with it..shot it better than his S&W .357 revolver.

When I was young I carried a iron on my hip man was I cool as I got older it got heavy and in the way.

When handgun hunting I carry one.

When rifle hunting I carry a rifle.

Never both there is no occasion that I would ever see the need for a HG if I have a rifle, there is no production multi shot HG made that can equal a 338 or a 06.

Glock 21: .45ACP times fourteen

in a paddle holster. Don't know if it's enough, but it's what I've got. I forget the brand of bullets, but they're those kind you look at and say, "yep, that augha work".

I used to carry a handgun all the time while hunting. As HuntsDucks said, it's too heavy now that I am older. I do carry a handgun when I am birdhunting with a shotgun in pig country.

Always- Hunting and on road trips. A stainless/alunimum-alloy Colt "Lightning" .380 (never seen another one in my life and bought it for my wifes 2and year Christmas presant- and yes I still hear the storys of that from our family and my co-workers). 7 Round clip and 1 chambered- 2and clip hip pocket. First shot Hydro-Shock- then staggered Hydro/ jacketed-scored wadcutter/hydo/wad ect.

2and clip all wads.

It may sound lame but it packs so light and w/the Nylon holster/Metal clip I can fit it on my belt it going light/ backpack strap in front if wearing as full pack, and small of back when going outside when some is im our court at night. No reason for them to be here except is up to no good. Call City police fist- wait 5 min. then go out w/ flashlight and tap on the window. And when on the road and car/truck/travel troubles ever arise (God forbid), If it does happen and I gotta take a walk for assistance the wife WILL protect the boys.

I did use it once to put a deer out of its missery after it went thru my pasenger quarter pannel/grill on the Mendocino coast. Saved the hair for the insurance company.
