I use them as a thermal blanket to hold moisture and heat in the ground. This helps the organic process of introducing bugs and micro organisms back into the eco system. That is when I don't need one for a patch quilt or floor rug.

I have tried twice to tan a hog hide and failed miserably. I think you guys are probably being just a bit tongue in cheek on your answers. Please forgive me for trying be somewhat serious.
I wouldn't bother trying to tan any hide other than a young sow at this point. I have no way of separating the armor plate from the skin. I still think it would be good material for a holster or knife scabbard.

I guess I should make a vest for my dogs out of it. If it protects one boar from another....They would blend in too, maybe help them sneak up on the pigs.

One of my Filipino neighbors that Bigworm and I supply with hogs, likes to have the whole hog minus the innards. They rub the entire pig down with hot water removing the hair and use the entire pig skin and all. I am not sure what they do with the skin but they do eat it.

You guys are missing the best part of the pig. I actually like eating the skin. It's similar to eating skins from a domestic pig, only harder, and chewier. You all should try it. If not, just donate it to me. I'll be glad to take it off your hands. It is a bit of work to get the hair off and cleaning it but after that, it's skin tasting good!

Flatbroke,

They remove the hair just like the domestic pig and cut them in to small 2"x4" size. Boil them let it dry and deepfry.

im hoping he will get sick someday from eating all the spoiled rotting hydes i leave
out there... besides, all the skins on the hogs i whack have some kind of boils or
cysts growing on them ,NASTY!! just plain NASTY!!! probably add a little crunch
to them though if you over cooked um a bit...:skeered:

You boys need to settle the foolishness offline. :no no:

As far as the hides, I've heard that you can make pretty cool rug from them, just like a bear hide. Key is to get the fat off quickly. And, of course, you can make your hunter's cap from it too.

I found the flavor of the skin a little stronger than I liked, but I've only eaten it a couple of times.
