Does anyone hunt hogs with an SKS?? My 15 yr old daughter wants to hunt pigs and this is the lightest recoil I have.

I shoot them with a 7.62X39; however, I use an AK. No gun restrictions on hogs in SC so I use 30 rounders.
Cool!

I have when my regulat rifle didn't get nback from the smith in time for the hunt.
I didn't get anything, but think it is a handy close range rifle.
No need to get your daughter a flinch w/something more than she can handle.
Good luck out there.

Dlv,

Do a search on this site, and you'll find someone else asking almost the identical question. You'll also see that the answers get pretty wide open.

The 7.62x39 will kill a pig. At a reasonable range (treat it like a 30-30) it should do OK with good placement and a decent bullet. Don't use the FMJ ammo, as it's both illegal and offers poor hunting performance.

There are much better calibers out there that offer low recoil and better performance, but if it's all you have and your daughter will shoot it... then get out there and hunt!

You obviously have not shot a hog with a FMJ. FMJ are NOT illegal to use on NON-GAME animals in SC and GA, pigs are non-game animals (no season and no limit) . The thick pig skin opens the HP's right up. They kill the piss out of hogs!!!!

I am in the very same boat as you right now. My 11 year old son is in training right now to hunt with me in a years time and the SKS will be his rifle of choice. Both of my Mausers are just too much for him and I do not want him to develop a flinch and other bad habits. He loves to shoot the SKS at Los Altos Rod and Gun Club because of the 40 yard tin can range. Nothing like seeing those cans and water bottles blow up. A trip to the range is a reward for good grades and good behavior. I am in the process of installing a Tasco red/green dot scope in a Scout mount for him. I have a question, since the SKS top loads with a stripper clip and takes ten rounds, how do you go about making it take only five rounds so you are legal for hunting? By modifying it to take a detachable mag of any size, you are now making it an illegal assault rifle. Is there a way to install some sort of a plug or block to reduce to five rounds? Any help would be appreciated, Bob.

Yup, as Rancho has said, 10 rd. rifle clips are legal for hunting in California. Shotguns are limited to a total of 3 rounds(1 chambered and 2 in the magazine for shotgun hunting in California). 'Nuff said.

Hay guys,
You have been more than helpful and I thank you. So I guess in SoCal we should stick with a soft tip copper jacketed, any one use hollow point?
rybx, where are you from? the ten round capacity should be o.k.

You're absolutely right, CamoSnob... I have not ever shot a pig with FMJ ammo, since it IS illegal in CA where I and dlvmark are hunting. SC and GA regs don't mean a heck of a lot in CA where pigs are managed as game animals.

As far as the ethics of using FMJ (non-expanding) ammo for hunting big game, that's an argument that has been battled here more than once. It's a bad call, and totally unnecessary since there are much better options out there.

Mark, I don't know how many ammo choices you have for the 7.62x39, but something that performs along the lines of the Remington Core-lokt would be a good choice. I doubt there are any Barnes or Nosler loads for that caliber, but if there are, they would be good choices too. Controlled expansion hollow-points work OK, at least in my .44, but you definitely want to err on the side of penetration over explosive expansion (e.g. ballistic tips or lightweight hollow-points).

I have hunted hogs with an sks in the past. Would not do it again. If ur lucky enough to hit their head or spine then go for it. But if u want to blood trail them and not find them then do that too. I shot a pig once at 50 yards and dropped it, when i walked towards it about 10 yards left, the pig got up and took off running. And was never found again. I shot another pig, and hit him in the middle of the spine and dropped him, the pig was alive but it was paralyzed. The ball is in your court, i would not risk wounding an animal if i am hunting with a minor. thats just my honest opinion.

The exact same thing could happen with an '06.

The 7.62x39 is basically a commie .30-30, and within reason (100 yds and under) will do a hog.

What I would use..

Also, Don't go w/the cheap hunting ammo. You know the stuff $2.99 for 20 rounds (unless you fing a great deal!). I think some of the problems arise from some people buying the cheapest ammo that is legal.
Get decent stuff from a reputable mafufacturer of ammo and it should do fine w/in it's enevelope.

Loco & Gypo, thanks for the great info. I will consider it. This week my daughter states the pigs are icky! So. go figure. May be she will come around again.
To all you others thanks for your imput. This the greatest internet site!!!!
I have to say that your insite about an assult weapon in the hunting area needs to be taken serousley. My SKS has been modified for 3 gun compition(and I am proud of the way it turned out) but would not be well received by outher hunters or the public, I guess. I changed the stock to a dragonov style added 3X9 variable scope, bipod, red/green dot scope, tactical flash light, laser sight all with pressure switches, and a tactical sling. I am reluctant to disclose all the things i did to it for fear of being rejected by the very group that has welcomed me with open arms. Oh well, it was a lot of fun to build and to shoot. So far everyone how has seen it seemed impressed. I hope for the right reasons.
