Hey fellow hunters,

I've been trying my luck hunting coyotes in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Area, but unfortunately, no success so far.

Are there any areas that are good for coyote hunting in Southern California thats about a 2 hr drive from orange county? I have OnX hunt and found some areas near yucca valley but it seems to be shotgun only.

Thanks again and looking forward to your valuable input!

There are lots of yotes in that area. Maybe it is your set up. Play the wind use sent killer on all your gear, use rabbit and coyote sent to mask yours in the area around you if you are trying to get them in close. The coyotes around there also use the wind and will circle around. Try different calls both elec. and hand calls. that area doesn't have a lot of cover so find someplace out there that does to break up your outline as well. don't hunt close to your vehicle or park where it won't be seen. The are gets a lot of hikers and shooters just out there popping off rounds try to get away from them. Hope this helps.

If you have a shotgun hunt that area. I mostly hunt them up behind my house and use a shotgun for that either 12 or 20ga. using # 2 steel shot.

Is bolt action bad because there isn’t enough distance or is it solely preference?

Up behind my house it would be bad to use a rifle based on where I set up. However the area you ask about using a rifle is no issue. There are houses with in rifle range where I set up at hence shotgun only. Safety first always remember that.
