I can't remember who it was, but during one of the discussions about "best caliber for hogs", I mentioned seeing a promotional video for Gamo's new alloy pellets, where the guy kills a hog with a .22cal pellet rifle.

Anyway, I found it today... can't believe Gamo actually posted this up on their site, but there ya have it.

For better or worse... Go here and select the "Hunting Experience" video clip.

I cringe just at the thought of a .22 airgun popping an adult wild pig. It was a carefully staged headshot on a piggie and in real hunting conditions, headshots are not always available. Maybe in a tightly enclosed pen where the piggie is completely enclosed and has no way of escape should the headshot airgun pellet fail to do it's job. Then with the piggie trapped inside the tight enclosure you can always follow up with a sledge hammer to the piggie's noggin to finish the job. Outdoors in the wild should the airgun pellet fail to drop the piggie, then it is a looooooooonnnnng chase to track and finish the job. I always like to use a 30-'06, 12 gauge slug, 45-70, .338 WM and .300 WM, therefore I save myself the effort of losing a wounded pig. I let tons of impact energy do the bone smashing job, not the squirrely 50 ft. lbs. of airgun pellet plink. Airguns are ratkillers, NOT pig smackers.
Gamo sure has utopia in mind in elevating the airgun to pig smackers. 'Nuff said.

Thanks for the video.

Shooting a big game animal like that, too many ways it could have wounded it and not finished the job...that is just not right...

And now, I am starting to think differently about pellet guns. I used to think if I saw a kid with a pellet gun, ah yeah, kids being kids. Now I am thinking a little bit differently. They sure have changed over the years. That thing was probably one of their high end guns, probably around 900 fps in .22 cal. I wonder how many kids have seriously lethal pellet guns that are left to their own devices playing with them in their backyards...

Just a note... and let me preface by saying I think the demo was ridiculous and poorly considered as a representation of hunting. No WAY would I condone or recommend using even a .22 rifle for hog hunting.

BUT... to be clear...

The airgun used in the video is a custom job pushing that pellet at 1600fps. It wasn't your typical Red Ryder or Crossman. The pellet being demonstrated is one of their high-density (similar to Hevi-Shot) pellets, and not your $1.99 per hundred Wal-mart variety. The hog was bayed by dogs, and shot inside 10 yards.

Still, a bad call for the real sportsman, but one heck of a marketing gimmick.

It wasn't the rubber bands that stopped that boar, Birddawg... he was ignoring the pain until he got a look at your face.

Dropped him in his tracks.

What a crock of shit!! Noone in their right mind would attempt that except to sell something. Hog should have bit his rocks off. That's what would have happened to me if I attempted such a stunt!

I've seen a rabid dog killed with one shot by an air gun. But they have very powerful air gun that shoot small ball bearing.

In Malaysia, they are hunting some kind of pygmy bear with British made break barrel air rifle similar to current Gamo model.

That video is a dramatization and most likely a set up shooting situation for marketing gimmickry.

That is the most distasteful hunting video I have seen in a long time. It makes wild pigs out to look like there as easy to kill as your neighbors house cat. And all of us in this forum know thats just not so. Just wait and see how many wounded pigs there'll be if people who aren't so smart use that gun and place the shots in the shoulder, chest or spine where 90% of the shots are placed. So, I decided to email them and let them know my concerns.

In Europe they use high powered air rifles for all types of big game.
RWS and others are used regularly.
So it does not seem outlandish
BUT GAMO??
