Took the boy out yesterday and we happened on a group of hogs. Let him take the first shot which scored him his first hog. A couple of seconds later I got one as well. He was excited until he had to drag it back to the truck. Fortunately it wasn't too far and except for the first 100yds it was all on level ground. He had just completed his hunter safety course a couple of months ago and it was his first big game harvest. I was very proud of his shot placement and his display of safety throughout the process.

THAT'S what it's all about. It will never get any better than that, Dad!

May you two have many more days and years afield.

As a hunter safety instuctor, I want to say Congratulations to you and your son. You for teaching your son how to hunt while making lifetime memories, and your son for shooting his first hog! Way cool!

We should all try to do what you have. We need to have younger generations of hunters to follow in our footsteps. This will help keep the hunting heritage alive. Which is a dying trend, especially here in California

Congrats again to you and your son

Congratulations to you both! I know you will enjoy that pork for many meals, and relive the hunt at each one.

What caliber/load was your son shooting?

He used a .243 with an 85 grain barnes TSX that I reloaded. The .243 was not my first choice in choosing a caliber but it seem to be the only caliber that was offered in a youth model rifle. The pig was around 90# and the .243 stoped it dead in its tracks. The TSX bullet was recovered and seem to mushroom up well. The pig was taken on private land near Lompoc.

Congrats Marc! James told me the story and it sounded like a pretty exciting hunt! Glad Kody got one.
