I hunted my ranch this weekend with the whole group of guys about 6 it's small aprox. #1000 acres on the ridge directly above Lake Sonoma. The moon was bright and it effected the hunting. I saw 4 legal bucks within shooting range -200 yrds on Sat, but nothing big enough to shoot (the club has enacted a very informal 3+ pts or better or real big big fork rule)(that rule has produced some huge bucks these last two years). I missed a huge black hog- a head shot at a rangefindered 419 yards straight uphill. I snapped shot after the electric range and didn't factor in the lack of gravity; that boar probally got a hole its ear not much drop to the .240 wthbry mag.. All the bucks were on the black acorns that are dropping heavy, last time this happened it meant a early rut, can we only hope?? The acorns had the hogs everywhere and I passed on 3 small hogs that were feeding around my stalk.
On Sunday i jumped a big fork past his ears and just as tall, a shooter if not a trophy. He never slowed down and I only had marginal shots; so I let him pass at 200 yards on the run. Nobody killed a buck this weekend but everyone saw at least 3 bucks (a lot of different ones in different locations) and a few of them were dandys ( past their ears and tall) that presented marginal shots.
After last years take on the ranch (all bucks 3x3+ at over 20 inches) nobody wanted to pull the trigger at next years big boys. A great hunt with great guys and a perfect weekend even if no deer or pigs taken. Everyone saw hogs while deer hunting, looks like the wet spring has really helped the hog population; it'll be a good year for you archers at the Lake.
