My elderly neighbor across the street(he already passed away) told me that he used to go dove and quail hunting(in the 1960's) on a ranch...............but the rancher cut-off access after discovering that some hunter had shot up his water tank..............costing very expensive repairs. My neighbor told me that he quit hunting after that because that ranch was a really accessible and nice bird area. This was in the 1960's when people were still raised in the relatively straight laced 1950's era. Right now in this era of people going to WalMart and not picking up the items that they drop on the floor and just walking away.....well, this is a very dangerous move to let John Q. Public in on your property without supervision or reliable referral. So yes, I would not have gone hunting in that property if I were to be grouped with armed strangers that came out of the woodwork from John Q. Public. It is too dangerous and second, I could be blamed and branded for the vandalism/damage that this John Q. Public group could do to the property. It could even end up in false charges filed against an innocent person because he happened to be grouped with the evil folks that would shoot a cow in the head just for the fun of it. No thanks, if John Q. Public will tag along........unsupervised.

I am also callin BS on the post. Why would someone let hunters on his land for "free" and take hogs. Not to offend anyone, but that simply don't make sense. You have something that is tearing up your property, but on the flipside can make you a lot of money. Why not contract your property out through a local outfitter who is licensed and bonded in the state. I know of a 4 outfitters in the Sonoma area, but I'm sure the county has more. Would be a sweet deal if this ad was legit, I just don't see it though...
Folks, I'm still getting emails about this, it appears to be a fraud. Anytime you see something like this that appears to be too good to be true, it usually is.
Spector17, do you have good reason to suspect this was a fraud? I was in Healdsburd last weekend at a winery. I mentioned this post and spoke with the winery owner about this post. When I mentioned it his face change expression and he seemed to know this individual and wasn't pleased with the news. He's had problems with pigs also and has someone come on his land to exterminate them. His opinion was there were too many risks and problems with having hunters on his property.
The ad email never answered any of the hunter's emails from what I've been told. If you look at the post it's a classic page out of the PETA playbook. Also others questioned the size of the ranch in this location. Too many inconsistencies. Too great of a deal to be true. Who runs ads on Craig's list for depredation help?
Ask the rancher you talked to if it's true? He would know if he's a neighbor and we all know when you live in the country, everyone knows everything about their neighbors.
That's why I questioned it, the owner reacted in a strange way. He an the counter person seemed to know who I was talking about. I may be naive, I could even begin to plot such a sacm for PETA but it woudn't surprise me.
A few red flags right off the bat was that despite owning a 7200 acre operation, he didn't know that pig hunting access is like owning a gold mine. For a city slicker I could see it, but anybody getting into that much property has to have at least one good ol boy working for him. I know a few vineyard managers around Sonoma County, and despite all of them being college grads, they are all rednecks at the core. There are pigs on many vineyards up here, but the access is rare and privileged. I have been invited to hunt turkeys only once, and I bug my guys all the time to let me in to shoot anything. Even a lot of the immigrants are hunters, or more likely poachers by definition, but the chances of this guy owning all that property and nobody that works there ponying up to "help" with the pigs are all but impossible. Also the guy offered turkeys and bucks to anybody who helped. Then he goes on to say that extermination services would charge $100 per pig. Now what guy in their right mind, pro or nt pro would charge to shoot a pig. I just think it is impossible to have that kind of land, be involved in viticulture, and cow farming, and not know if anybody would be willing to shoot "these vermin". Boy did I want this to be true but deep down I think we all knew it was BS. The clincher for me was when 24 hours after the ad posted, there was an update that a cow had been shot, along with his water tower. So he got guys out there, let them in, they got several pigs, a cow, and some equipment, and he discovered it and secured a deal with a guide all in the course of one day. No way.
What I can't figure out is why this was done. I was expecting to get spam and telemarketers by the dozen but that never happened either. The PETA angle doesn't make any sense either because what do they have to gain from something like this? hundreds of emails offering money, references, respect of land, advice, labor for trade, and who knows what else people offered to secure their place in line of the too good to be true pig hunt. I'll bet it was a huge list of the friendliest emails about how safe, dignified, careful, responsible, and insert complimentary word here _____ of a hunter you would want on your land, wife will bake you the best pie you ever ate, pleas for access.
I would like to know who did this, but I suspect it will never come out. For all I know it might have been some high school kid who thinks it is funny to cause anxious hunters to lose sleep over getting excited about the best free access they have ever heard of. The only saving grace I think is that whoever did this, unless they created a new email account just for this ad, will have to swim through probably hundreds of emails for weeks from all the responses. I hope they have a private email server and it crashes from overload.
They gain the 80% of the population that is nuetral on hunting who just read about slob hunters shooting a cow and water tower. Antis jerk with the masses just like some of the hunting community does. Hearts n minds and that ad comes off as a black eye to the unknowing. Keep telling the lie and some folks start to believe it.
I agree with you about the rancher claiming to be clueless about the pigs and what to do with them.
Thanks guys, I understand now. That kind of thinking is just beyond me! I'd like to find someone who's computer savie enough to back track this fools email so we could cause a flood he'd never forget.
By the way I was one of those ethical hunters that offered to trade labor, share harvest and a kick butt home made cheese cake of his choice for a chance to hunt :bag-on-head:
freezer, some of us used to play on the anti hunting and PETA forums. They had scripts they hand out and post on their websites on how to disrupt our hunts and how to use the forums against us. I haven't seen them do it recently but they used to be pretty active on hunting forums. You could tell an anti because they would use works or phrases that just didn't sound quite right. Since most of them had never hunted they didn't know the nuances and language and tripped themselves up most times. Many years ago some folks from the Bowsite had some fun with several anti hunting sites. The one thing we learned was yeah, you can disrupt their house but they also have the horsepower and time to come disrupt ours. It's almost like an unwritten truce happened. That or the felony hacking laws helped curtail the fun.
Though the games would be fun it would be an unproductive waste of of time. Besides an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth would leave the world blind and toothless. All I can say is BUMMER!
