My son bagged his first hog with dogs this weekend. He has been on numerous hunts but never allowed to carry a weapon as you have to be careful when shooting around dogs. He has shot several hogs with a rifle but now he can say he is a true hog dog hunter.

I took three dogs out this weekend and my top dog struck in the steepest part of the ranch we hunt. I drove to the top of the mountain in case the hog broke over the top while my dad and son approached from the bottom. Apparently my dad who is closing in on sixty got winded but my son continued (as he is in excellent physical condition) I heard three shots, fired in rapid succession, followed by my son on the radio, Hog down. I thought to myself, dang the old man sure fired fast with the 44 pistol.

as I approached my son told me that it was so cool, he was there watching the dogs stop the hog, as it was starting to break away and then go to baying. he was crawling through a hog tunnel when the hog heard and or saw him and started to charge when he opened up with the lever action rifle. (I thought to myself the kid must be related to the rifleman of old. he sure got the shots off fast.)

But... let me tell you I've been in that same position, crawling through one of those pig tunnels and I would be thinking in the back of my mind, "what the hell am I doing"
<
hopeing I get to the pigs and hopeing at the same time that I don't if you know what I mean.

Congrats and nice looking piggie

yes it does take some intestinal fortitude knowing the hog is going to be there since you can hear the dogs working and lord knows what they have stopped. It makes it much easier when catch dogs are caught but I no longer hunt with them. I am definitely proud of my son as I have seen several grown men refuse to go due to fright.

Hey Flatbroke-
Congrads on your hunt. I can relate because the picture of your son looks exactly like my sone. Same hair and clothes etc. Is he about 13 or 14?
Did you hunt close to the Willow Springs ranch? I saw a earlier post that you are down by Tres Pinos.

Nice hog and tell your son congrads.

Flatbroke, thanks for sharing your sons successful wild boar hunt with dogs! I would like to do a wild boar bowhunt with dogs in the future, it looks and seems exciteing to have dogs as partners to hunt with because you can tell they love to hunt pigs as much as we do!...........tra

That is really outstanding stuff there. Congrats on raising a stud kid. Crawling thru pig tunnels is only enjoyed by a few. Very cool.

Going in to a bayed hog through a tunnel in the brush...one of the many rewarding elements of hog hunting that us dog men have a patent on. I know the feeling and love every thrilling minute of it.

Congratulations to your son!!!

Congratulations to both and your son, that is a real nice set of cutters on that porker.
I'm new to this board and was just curious what made you give up using catch dogs?

The vet bills. I find that The catahoulas I use stop the hogs and with 3-4 dogs they do a good jog keeping the hog spinning while avoiding serious injuries most of the time.

Nice! Sounds like everyone had a great time. The picture would have been much better though if you would have had your boy smile. The tough guy faces in pictures don't do justice to the fun time had and quality of the hunt. Pictures are best when everyone is showing their pearly whites....just like the hog.

Flatbroke, I can understand the vet bills part, although I have been fortunate in the short time I've been hunting hogs with dogs I have not had a serious injury. Had a few good skin cuts but nothing a few staples or sutures couldnt fix but I know that day is coming. We hunt mostly at night so we cant carry any firearms plus the landowner doesnt allow it. So we catch and tie.
