My son turned twelve in February and asked me what kind of grades would he have to get for me to take him on a pig hunt. I quickly said "Umm three A's and two B's"
Soooo last month he shows me a copy of his final grades with a BIG grin on his face. My wife and I are so proud of him that we said "whatever you want kid great job!"
I call up Shay (Bigboarstopper) and we set a date. It was absolutely the best experience I could have asked for, for my son! Shay said even though I wanted Elliot to learn how to spot and stalk he would have the dogs ready as a backup in case we get down to the wire and he can't make it happen. The dogs increase the odds of finding hogs so he won't go home empty handed. As it turned out it was a nail-biter! My son kind of waited too long to make a shot when we saw hogs (lots of them) Saturday morning and they got spooked and ran. Man was he bummed! We didn't see any hogs that evening so he didn't sleep all night wondering if he was going to make it happen the last morning on Sunday. Well Sunday morning we get into the spot where we saw the hogs the morning before and lucky for him there were some customers... One of Shay's hunting partners asked to go with my son for the final stalk to talk him through the shot. I really wanted to be with him for it but it definitely was the right move. Sometimes kids will take advice from ANYONE other than their PARENTS!!! Anyway he places the shot right through the boars heart and shatters his opposite shoulder. Even with a perfect shot the maniacal beast still ran 100 yards! If the zombie apocalypse ever happens It will probably be zombie pigs because they can live through almost anything!!
All in all Shay, and his buddies Mike (Ranch owner), Dean , Buck and their dogs, all came out just to help a kid get his first boar which was waaayyy beyond the call of duty! I will be forever grateful for their wisdom, advice and general hospitality. My son was floating on air all the way home! He couldn't wait to show all of his relatives and buddies the pictures of his wild boar hunt! Thanks Shay for a hunt my son will never forget. I'll definitely be back when it's my turn!
