I have a Sony F707. It is several years old. It has done pretty good. I was new to photography when I got it, so from that perspective, it has been great. 10x zoom (5x optical + 2x digital.. sony's digital zoom isnt as bad as some others), 5MP, manual controls.. My next cam will be a little more high end, which will be a DSLR with exchangable lenses.
which one are you considering? what are you requirements in a cam?
My favorite features- the EXTREAM amount of battery life. I dont know how the newer ones are lasting- but the sony will last along time.
The memory sticks are a steal from Fry's or Costco for 128mb- the hard part is not loosing them.
With the f707 the only 2 parts that have gone wrong is that the lense body had worn loose from the camera body (I dropped it on some rocks in Cole Creek) and would short out- warranty repaired it after 2.5 years in an extended waranty hassle free and fast.
Only other/current is that I busted my manual focus ring via the lens cover string to the camera strap when it got wound to tight. I just put some fletching glue on it and have no more manual focus.
I also love the little mpegs for a quick flash of something more than any pic can tell.
There are many other great cameras out there- I have been sold on Sony for alot of products- but might look into a digital SLR for my next one. (Cannon rebel?)
yeah battery life is awesome. be sure to check out http://www.dpreview.com Phil does pretty extensive reviews. I usually jump to the end and look at the pros/cons.. then go back and look at the fine print.
I have the MVC CD-250. It's a camera! Not a little thing, but large, easy to handle. lots of features, easy to use and takes some really good pictures for only being 2mpx. My brother in law bought the CD-500 5mpx. The battery life is outstanding. I can buy different lenses for it from Sony.
Complaints...
When red eye reduction is on, it takes too long between the series of flashes and the real flash.. people tend to move before the picture taking flash happens.
In movie mode, I can't turn the flash on like a spot light, so unless you have very bright external source of light, movies at night don't work.
But here's a sample picture or two..
I don't think it's too bad for a camera that I bought new for $198.00
