Sony is 6.0 mp, Olympus is 7.1.
Sony is 12x optical zoom, Olympus is 10x.
Sony has a 2" screen, Olympus has a 2.5".
Sony has 32mb of memory, Olympus has 21.
Both are on sale but the Sony is still $50 more.

So does the greater zoom, even with lower mega pixels, and more memory warrant the extra cost of the Sony?

Thoughts?

I have the H1 and have zero complaints. You'll really like the 12x zoom and the 2" screen is more than enough, plus the 2.5" one will drain the battery quicker....i say fork up the extra cash and buy the Sony. Also, the memory is a non-issue as you'll be buying a 1GB memory card or larger for Africa.

I'd go for the extra reach of the Sony (12x) rather than the extra mega-pixels.
Also, a 32mb memory card will not be adequate. If going on a big trip, plan on getting a 1Gb or a couple 512mb cards.

I started with a Sony camera, and would still buy another one today if I was looking for a non-SLR style camera. They use Zeiss "glass" (not plastic lenses like some) with T* coatings, and overall build a good product. Even though they are not known for "cameras", they put out a good product in my opinion.

If you are shooting hi-res jpg quality, you might get 16 photos on a 32mb card. 32mb is just a teaser that they send with the camera.

On a 1Gig card, you can get approx. 500 hi-res jpg photos.

You might consider several 512MB cards so you don't have all of your eggs in one basket. These things can and do go bad.

I chose the H2, and am tickled with my choice. It shoots great photos, and the 12x zoom is just what I wanted for wildlife snapshots. As for the memory, go ahead and spring for a 1g card or a couple of half-gig cards. Cards aren't that expensive, and they'll extend your shooting day.

Olympus makes a good camera too, but in my opinion the Sony takes it.
