What a good father's day gift, Oregon BG hunt results were available on line and I got South Sumpter. Does anyone have any history with the area? Thanks.
Congrats on the draw…That’s the cow hunt right? South Sumpter is a really tough hunt without access to private property. There are elk in there but mostly on private land and several of the major land owners are unwilling to allow trespass onto their property. I know this land really well and several places on BLM land you might try include: Mormon Basin, Pedro Mountain (access is difficult and problematic but people do hunt it), Juniper Mountain, and potentially table rock (flat and open). The Vale District BLM manages this land out of their Baker City office and they have maps available there. There are elk out in the sage but they are really flighty and hard to nail down. They hear your car/atv coming and they head for the next county. Good luck on your hunt…There are some really pretty areas out there and you will have a good time.
Congrats on drawing.
What fishn said.
Start by calling the OR DFW and BLM offices to talk to the biologists and staff about herd numbers, holdover numbers and access.
The herds seem to hang out on the ranches after any pressure.
