All you guys from SoCal,
Where you do your pig hunting in So Cal?
I hate to drive 260 miles north, is there any ok area that holds a few porkers, I mean public, not Tejon Ranch, what about Tehachapi, New Cuyama, Santa Barbara sourrounds, Carrizo Plains, Bakersfield, etc?
Anyone hunt these local areas? Maybe we can get together sometimes and share the expenses?
<

PS: Im 39 yrs old married w/child, no offense to anyone, but I'm looking for someone responsible not a kid!

Hey there! I just wanted to give my 2 cents. Pay the money for a private hunt! I grew up in Newport and spent years following every "maybe". There are pigs in Los Padres, Carizzo, and alot of other places fairly close to So Cal. The problem is not many and you findem on some super homeworked up (BLM, topos, etc.) and then spend boku gas$$$ and hours. There are pigs, but I'm 32 now and I still get out a whole lot. I also realize you can't put a price tag on an insane hunt. I'd go with ya, but I live in the Bay Area. There is a lot of info on this site and these guys really help ya out!

Good Luck!

Send me a mssg if I can help

Thanks for the info JKVSHOOTER,
I'm not into the "pay for play" when come to pigs, the ridiculus $400-500 + prices are keeping me out of the game, I'll do my homework till can find a public area, I'm not desparate in getting a pig I just looking for a good time of camping/hunting thing if you know what I mean, I don't find pig hunting to be an exotic or a real big game hunt to throw money away, some other people might have a different opinion which I respect, but again I don't find paying hundreds of dollars to hunt pigs, coyotes or whatever is resonable, this is a business no longer a sport, these pigs do a lot of damage to ranchers, crops etc, why should I have to pay $500 to remove the pest from someone else backyard? There's always in oportunity to find someone else joy to cash in. Welcome to Ca!

Here we go again.. Didn't you whine about this about the same time last year?
<

Look, if you don't want to shell out the sheckels, that's fine - go beat the public land bushes..But don't expect folks to give up hard earned info to someone on the internet.

Or put your money where your mouth is and buy a piece of land where there's pigs.

And then don't forget to invite strangers to come on that land to hunt them for free.

Yep - WTF am I doing here listening to your crying and whining?

And please disregard any advice I gave you on that other thread, I think you are well served to listen to whatever info you get from some turner's counter jockey.

Good luck, skippy.

Ok my mistake, I didn't recognize you from the other thread, I'd appreciate your advise on that other thread, but you went overboard on this one, if you read your post again you can see is not a friendly way to give people advises. I'm not here to get into a flamming war, that's not what I'm looking for.
I also understand some of you guys are pro pig hunters that need to pay to get a good success,
but for me is a complete different thing, because never hunted pig before, so I want to start like a newbie
on a public land, what's so wrong in asking that?

7MAGHUNTER, there is some areas in the Southern Cal that are open to public hunting...but don't expect much. Most are over run with hunters which scare the game away. As for opportunities to hunt ranches, do as the rest of us have and knock on a few dozen doors and hope for the best. As for Tehachapi, yes there are hogs there, mostly on private ranches. Look for public land there and good luck. (I was there on a private ranch today and saw deer, yotes and quail....no pigs but evidence of rootings around the oaks. Good luck though....

7mag do your research. You probably won't get alot of info due to the fact that public land hogs are tough and most guys have worked hard to find areas that may produce and aren't going to give that info up. Try to hook up with someone that has access to private property
<

Oh and by the way I have never and will never pay for a pig hunt.

Someone told me this before, about the knocking at the ranches, I've been told sometimes they let you in if you give the owners $100 in appreciation, but it can be in ol day work of driving around, and finding the right person I guess?
I'm sure there's a few people here that hunt dirt cheap in private lands.
if anyone knows a non profit friendly ranch in SoCal and need help with the expenses pm me I split the cost with you, and a bonus!

GOOD LUCK! Reading maps and talking on the internet is not the same as putting feet on the ground and scouting. If your looking for public land try somes bases like Fort hunter liggett, Camp Roberts or Vandenberg all at a same fee for a pass and start scouting and keeping notes on want you see. It may take a half dozen trips but once you learn the area you can/will take pigs.

I just wanted to thank 7magHunter for cleaning his post up- or whoever cleaned it up, I really think one can get their point across without all the harsh and fowl language. Makes a nice person like me not want help at all. Thank you.
<

And jkvshooter- your advice is actually not lame at all. Really good advice considering the options at hand. In, of course, my opinion. Sorry he bit your head off

Well, I don't think it is abnormal that you don't want to pay $500 to hunt pigs. But, stomping around on public land hoping to see a pig, doesn't sound real appealing either. Good luck.

I cleaned it up, like you said there's no need for harsh and fowl language, if someone don't like my thread because of a different opinion is ok, but a personal attack is not what I'm here for.

And about JKVSHOOTER, you're getting the messeage wrong, I didn't said "LAME" because of his post, I think it is a good post not lame at all, I was refering to Ca pig hunting only, I just want to get things straight.

Vandenberg may be owned by the government but is certainly is not "public" in the sense of FHL or even Camp Roberts. Much more restrictive entry. A search here or on google will point you to the requirments for entry. Not picking a bone, just don't want to see someone drive up there and expect to get access without knowing what's required.

Don't expect for someone to give you a good public land area to hunt. I have been hunting pigs since I could remember. Once I moved to Cali I found it extremely difficult at finding pigs on public land. I had a 3 year dry spell. I hunted almost twice a month (sometimes 3 times a month) all over central and southern California without ever seeing a pig.

Personally I hate paying a guide for his services, it is more rewarding for me to put in my time and hard work to bag a hog (or anything for that matter), but thats just me. If I count the amount of money I have spent on gas over the years trying to explore every part of the national forests I could probably have gone on a African safari with it, but thats not the point here.

Point is, if you don't like pay to hunt, thats fine, I am just the same way. But if you want info about public lands to hunt, the best advice is get out there and find it yourself. Once you find a place like that (after hours of searching) then you will realize why you have to keep that place a secret.

Now, that doesn't mean you can't find info here on JHO or the web. The info you find will be general and will help guide you in certain directions. You can even look on DFG's website and find some info there.

Good luck on your quest.
