no I didn't find it, just my luck. Earlier today my dad asked if I wanted to head out shed hunting today, I said sure but I had to wait because FedEx was coming to pick up my laptop so it could be sent in for repairs, anyway my dad went to town and came back a while later, he decided to head out without me lol and he found a spike shed not too far from where my cam is now. He likes to carry a 4-pronged garden rake with him whenever we are out scouting or shed hunting and he said he never would have found it, but he hit it with the rake. lol I went out and looked for the other half but couldn't locate it, I never find anything, I probably walked past this thing 5 or 6 times last week knowing my luck lol

I think a smallest shed thread is needed. They really are the hardest to find. Interesting idea on the rake. Nice color to it too.

I've picked up about a half dozen spikes over time. I think the best thing about em is that it assures you that you're looking hard enough. If you're finding spikes odds are you're not missing too much.

Tsmola-your getting close anyway to finding that first shed.CONGRATS to your dad!!
I like your thinking Shag,I tell myself that all the time.If your finding those little ones you can't be missing the bigger ones.I've got a pile of those little spike sheds.LOL I found two in one day this year that were from last year.I don't think I've got any matched sets off a spike though.

let's hope I'm close to finding my first, this was only my dad's second shed ever, the only other one he found was a 2 point one on a shed hunt a few years ago, on that trip I stepped right over a 4 point shed and my friend found it, it's stuff like that that's making me go insane

4 years ago my uncle found 4 in one year, 3 of which were in spots I had checked out before, and one was a huge basic 4 point with a bunch of stickers and 10 inch curling tines, in a spot I checked out days before. then he found a small matched set 10 feet apart a day after I had planned to shed hunt but decided not to for some reason. I'm going to head out tomorrow, the buck have to be dropping I gotta find them before my uncle goes out cutting brush in his tractor and spots em all by accident, which is what usually happens.

you want to see a small shed, check the one in the shed photo gallery at my site, it was found in an antler trap, I don't think there is any way someone could have found it otherwise. oh and by the way, he mainly uses that rake as a walking stick, it was pure coincidence he happened to hit it with it. (yes I did carry it when I went out, I'll try anything

he had hip replacement surgery in December, and he's pretty much off his cane and walking around already. I'm gonna pound that area tomorrow, the other side can't be too far! I hope, I mean there should be some more dropped by now. (knowing my luck as I am walking out a big buck will come out and drop his antlers into some of my footprints in the mud and my uncle will be driving his tractor back there and find em) My dad found this one about 10 feet from the edge of the woods, what do you think guys? should I hit the fields and woods edges mainly? or should I look back in the thick stuff?

I'd start in the fields,then along the inside of the woods the lenght of the field.I'd make a note of any trails entering the field from the woods then follow those trails back into the woods.There's a good chance you might find sheds laying on the trails with all the snow you had.The trails just might lead you to where they were laying up at during the snow.
When all else fails,do a grid pattern search covering everything.And make sure you watch the ground and close,don't worry what might be laying 20yds ahead.Give the area ahead of you a quick scan and keep your eyes watching the ground about 10yds ahead of you.Most my sheds I can't believe I didn't spot them sooner then I did and when I do spot them most are wiyhin 10-15yds.

Congrats to your dad!! The advice given is good, follow it. One thing though... look back behind you every once in a while as you are walking. I've found a few sheds that I have basically walked over and never would have found them if I didn't look back and scan the area I just came from. Grass, leaves and sticks can hide them from view from one direction only to see them sticking out like a sore thumb from another direction.

If you rewalk an area, never walk it the same direction as the previous time. Always try to hit it from a different direction if possible. We don't miss many sheds but enough to make it worth while by rewalking it in a different direction or having your partner walk your area and you walk his when rewalking an area. Always get a kick out of finding a shed with someones foot print right by it. Well unless it was your foot print from the time before. Even worse when Tyler finds the shed and my foot print. He knows no mercy in giving grief. Course he had a good teacher!!
