So what does everone think about Steiners? I think i'm going to order the Predator 8x42 roof prisms. But then i started reading all these good things about the zeiss classics...those will be about $150 more. Your thoughts?

And one more question: When you hear people talking about their binos fogging up, and binos that are "fog proof" is that internal fogging or the fog that appears on the eyepieces when you put your eyes up to them on a cold morning? Right now i have NIkon Action 8x40's, and i kept getting the exterior fog on my cold deer hunting trips last year.

Lastly....the Zeiss Classics 10x40, it doesn't look like they have dioptic adjustments...the Cabelas add doesn't mention them and i can't see them in the picture. Is this right?

wow....thanks for all the info!

You see...this is exactly why i originally posted my other binocular question in the Mule Deer forum....but someone thought it would be more appropriate to move it to this forum...which is absolutely DEAD. THanks!!! I would try posting this back in the muley forum...but i might get in trouble. Oh well...no one is reading this anyway

Maybe nobody here knows anything about them. I have heard they're good, but I can't remember ever actually seeing a pair. I had the same problem a few years ago trying to find out about Dokter Optics - another premium German brand.

I think zeiss beats the crap out of steiners in quality....

But, just an idea...Buy both from cabelas and return the one you don't want and let us know the differences:

--overall clarity
--clarity near the edge
--ease of focusing
--ergonomics (which "fits" better)
--coatings (glass near the sun @ sunset/sunrise and look for the least glare)
--amount of light let in (compare the two @ dusk/dark)
--image sharpness/contrast (find a stuffed turkey or something with lots of variation in color and a lot of detail)

Thanks wmidbrook, but i broke down and just ordered the Zeiss ClassiCs 10x40. I went to a local binocular store and even though they didn't have either the Steiners or the Classics...i did compare the difference between handholding 8x and 10x models...i decided i could live with the 10x. And i've read so much good stuff about those zeiss classics...

I did get the opportunity to play around with the Leica Ultravid 10x42...and OH MY GOD!!! thos things were awesome!! but i can't justify spending 1600 bones them. the $750 zeiss classics are about as high as i can go....i'll report back when i have them in my hot little hands!

Congrats~! Great glass and your eyes won't tucker out.

There's a shop over in the town of Mendocino that sells leicas, minox, pentax. I looked through the Ultravids. Yes, they are pretty darned amazing but not twice as good as the pentax or minox 400-500 dollar ranged binos...I thought they were maybe 25% better.

But, the I'd say your classics are close to 90% of the bino the Ultravid is in most catagories except possibly color---the leica's ultravid seemed to amplify color to me...not sure that's a great thing or not but it's definately noticable!

Yeah, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade my binos here sooner than later...I'll be in a classic glassing country for muley's this fall and am thinking Minox 15x50's to mount on my tripod. I'll be behind the glass most hours of daylight for 5 days...need better glass than I have for that.
