I am very new to the sport of pig hunting and am looking forward to it very much. Jesses' page looks like a great place to find help and advice. I bought a packet of BLM maps and thought Stockdale Mountain looked like a good place to start, but I read a couple of very negative posts about it. Could someone give me a little background on this?

Access into the area is hiking on the tough side. The rancher who owns the ranch adjacent to the entrance will NOT allow you to use a small part of his property to walk on, which would be a much easier route into the area. He will immediately call the law and you will get written up, no question (so I've heard, haven't had the pleasure). He guides on his ranch, so he doesn't want any tresspassing. Very tough terrain (steep, deep), but once you get in, you will see sign. Pigs are very nocturnal in that area so be in there before light, for sure. Otherwise, you be bustin brush all day hoping to flush one.

The negative comments about Stockdale are true. The area is very heavily patrolled and you will be sited for the slightest infaction.I have even heard that the locals(Paso Robles area) avoid hunting the area. Its a shame actually the area is a perfect weekend hunt if you don't mind busting some brush, from what I understand it over an incident where some cattle were distrubed/shot.If you decide to go be very cautious of your whereabouts. Even with the increase in rancher patrols, I still hunt it a few times a year.I do this by staying on the right(public) side of the fence.. which can be hard to do because the area is poorly marked but I will give you a tip that can put some odds in your favor. If you can find a buddy that will drop you off and pick you back up..thats a big plus!My buddy's ex girlfriend used to drop me and a him off on Sat morning about 4 am..hit the beaches over by Cambria/visit friends and we'd cell phone her Sunday evening to pick us up!) The way the patrols supposedly work is they check the end of the road for trucks and run the license plate...if your from out of the area..they are going to set up on you. No truck, no set up
<
Just be cammoed down and ready to do it on both drop offs!!!

Good luck

LOL....man it's been awhile since I've been there......used to be a good place to go and hunt and just get away from it all.......dang shame we're loosing more and more places to hunt every year and the worse part about it is that alot of the places are public lands that some private land owner gets the law involved and makes it so rough to hunt there (even though your doing it legally) that people just stop going there......as far as I'm concerned BLM land is land I'm paying for upkeep on and should all be open to the public.....not mostly landlocked and some land owner using for his/her own profits.

Yeah... I hear ya birddawg...It really is a shame...The only reasons I don't give up on the place are because it really is a good hunt and its where my first deer and hog hunts were as a tennager. Going there brings back some really fun memories of friends and game and adventures. But then again thats part of what hunting is all about (for me atleast).

Thanks for the info and the advice. I'd hate for my first trip out to be rewarded with a citation. I think I will cross Stockdale off of my list. I am also looking at Laguna Mountain, Curry Mountain, Williams, and Colinga Mineral Springs. I plan on using a surplus Yugo M-48 in 8mm Mauser that I have learned to shoot halfway decently. The recoil was a bit much at first, but I had a recoil pad installed (Paychmeyer decelerator) and it is quite a bit better now. thanks again for the info. rtbx15

Personally, I have never hunted there. Everyone I have talked to in regards to Stockdale have all said the same thing. BE CAREFULL. Know your location at ALL TIMES and MAKE SURE YOUR ON THE PUBLIC SIDE. Not worth it for me. I'll hunt elsewhere

ROFLMAO!....That landowner would be shooting off distress flares, dialing 911 screaming"INVASION!".. they'd take him off to the looney bin in Atascidero..and we'd have the spot back to ourselves again.

I think you guys are on to something here. It is one thing to harrass one or two hunters, but a dozen or more would be a different story. As long as we crossed all the T's and dotted the I's as well as carefully plotted our location, what could they do? Another idea that crossed my mind is to petition the BLM to put out more boundary markers. If enough of us made some noise, they might pay attention.

Ranchers and farmers put up boundary markers all the time. What's the legality of citizens putting up boundary markers on public land?

Well we could all e-mail BLM......but more than likely they'll end up making a land swap with the private land owner.....he'll trade some property that he has locked and end up owning stockdale mountain.....if you guy's think BLM is on our side you got a big surprize comming......they used to have on their website a statement like this on the selling of BLM property - "this is our land and we'll do what we want with it!"......I've heard they had to remove it....don't know....haven't been on their website in awhile...

On a serious note..... The JHP-POR-STOCKDALE sounds real good. That is, if a whole bunch of hunters showed up, it would be hard to 'bully' around, or falsely accuse them of tresspassing.

Something else that I don't understand is this: Isn't there a law that requires at least 3 'private property' signs per mile if no physical barrier (such as a fence) is present at the boundary ? That is, isn't the landowner RESPONSIBLE for either putting up a fence, or providing at least 3 signs per statue mile indicating that it is private property? I'm fairly sure I've read that in either DFG or California code......

We need to form a club/union which will take action against land-hogs.... I've seen a few places where the adjacent private land owner has put up home-made "Private-Property No-Hunting" signs on PUBLIC lands/roads.....

I'm up for a "JHP POR Stockdale Mountain" hunt. I'll make sure I have the GPS and the area map VERY handy.
<
On a serious note, if a large group of us headed over there, we could invade that area (Staying on the public side of course) and see what we can push out of there. Take a few hogs out of that area, cause we all know there the same hogs that make it over to Kesters property. He charges guide/trespass fees for those hogs, Hit him in the wallet where it hurts the most. Count me in, sure I can bring a few other hog hunters with me.....Sounds like fun.

What we really need to do is get the "Apocalypse Now" re-enactors together and hold a re-enactment out at this place. We get Jesse to play Marlon Brando's character and the rest of us can split on crazy tribesmen and crew of the ill fated river gun boat. We act out the night action parts with bon-fires, guns and the whole lot. I think this guy would freak out, but I think he would give us plenty of room.

The ranch in question is (the bear valley ranch) They do have private security patroling the area. I Myself have not had any trouble there. But I talked to one guy. When I went that hikes way back in there & sleeps out there. That came back & said always trouble there. He seen a gun against the truck & said you better take that away from the vehicle. Said He got a ticket for that one time. (Petty) but wrote for having/shooting from a vehicle. The bad thing is the harrasment on our own land of course. But it is also very sucky steep overgrown land. with a long long walk back into where it opens up some. Then that is small area for hunting. You get in there then you see a orange stick with an arrow says blm. Walk 5 feet then another one says different way. It's zig zagged back & forth all over in there. Very confusing & to write somebody up for being lost? Well there just a being huge DI*K for that one. Also if it is wet? That road in there is side ways in & out in a 4 wheeler. Oh ya & get a blm fire permit too before ya go. I'm sure they'll write ya up on that too. But what the hey after the first of the year I can go. I think it's a good thing for all of us to ban together. I'm sick of landlocking & giving wardens/sherriff's beef & deer hunting passes. Keeping us from our tax payed land. Don't get Me wrong I respect the law & law enforcement but come on. We have rights too. So lets do it even if it's just for a pow wow. Put up a big sign & everything lol. I'm in if it's after the 1st & before mid feb. Yes (BIRDDAWG) Going back to visit canada then lol.

I was telling my mom about this and she pointed out that land owners are doing the samething on some of the public beaches in Southern California. They build houses on the beach, block off the access to the public beach and then harass the public when they try to use it. They even go as far as to put locked gates at public access points that are between houses, which is very illegal. Then the beaches pretty much become defacto private land since no one but the private land owner can get access. Stockdale Mountain sounds like the same story.

Has anyone written BLM to ask them to make it clear on what the public access point is including lat/long points of the road? It seems we should be putting the burden on BLM and not have to take chances.
