Got a call from a buddy that we hadn't gotten drawn for Idaho. Went online and checked and sure enough, my license said not drawn for controlled hunt. Oh, well, plan B
That's too bad Taos. Especially since you live there. For a resident to not draw means they need to change the system. How successful are you with the general tag hunts? We haven't nailed down a zone for that yet.
What areas are you guys putting in for? I have drawn in my area for three straight years, two bulls and a cow permits.
May not have the biggest bulls but I havent been disappointed.
Usually unit 49, can't draw one to save my butt. I am gonna start trying elsewhere in the state. Guess I will be off to Co. this fall to shoot a cow or two.
First time applicant and I got lucky and drew a Controlled Antlered Elk tag in Idaho Area 48 this year. I'm told by the very experience Area 48 hunter and former guide that I'm going with that I'll have a good shot at a dandy Elk there. Can't wait!!!
Public Land has good elk. Of course weather is a factor, so is your willingness and desire to haul elk up/down steep hills. I've only lived here 2 season. The first was alot of work and learning and being just behind the herds. This last year I connected on a decent 5pt bull, but he was 2 miles down hill from the road. I've never been to Colo, but I hear they have a large herd and huge flat mesa's, which I guess is why most people head there first, which works for me. I lived and hunted in Calif for 35 years, now I'm living me life long dream.
I drew unit 36A-2 antlered elk. Plan on hunting around the Herd Lake area. Drew this tag a few years back and saw 30 6 point bulls is 8 days. Took the largest I saw scored 315". Going later in the season to try and get away from many of the bull hunters. There will be some cow hunters but want to try something different. Freinds that deer hunt the area have seen great bulls toward the end of the rifle deer season. We will see!!!
Thanks, Jon. We have been looking at that. In fact, we are focusing on the McCall area now. There are lots of cow tags left. We are doing some research now.
Change of plans again. Looks like we are going over-the-counter with tags for the Boise unit.
I'm not sure how IGF does their second draw but looking at the results of that draw it appears that non-residents don't get tags in that draw. The several controlled hunts with lots of tags left in the past two years have not given any non-residents any tags in the second draw. I'm calling Idaho today to confirm that.
Kentuck,
I handn't realized that the second chance drawings were shutting out non residents. Will be interesting to hear from F&G if that is the case.
Good luck.
Jon
Talked with DFG there and they said that there is no restriction on non-res in the second draw. But if you look at the results of the second draw for the past two years very few tags get handed out.
