Finally back to feeling normal again after 10 days of bowhunting in WY with my buddy Steve. This was probably our best archery hunt. We each took nice bulls and I got that once in a lifetime shot at a nice mule deer buck and made it stick. We camped down by the road this year and hiked in each day instead of packing in a camp. Lots more walking and climbing but still effective. We got into elk each day, we had to initiate the bugle to get the elk to talk, otherwise they were holed up in the timber. On day one I got that bonus shot on the muley, working a ridge at mid-day, spotted him and a buddy buck bedded under the ridge. Was able to stalk up and get around on top and step over the edge at full draw to make the shot(48 yard downhill).

On day 3, after bugling we heard a grunt up a drainage. After an hour trying to find a place to cross a river we finally got in and let out a bugle and had an instant response. We hurried to get setup up with the wind right and called again, and he came right in fast. I was able to get a bearing on which opening he would come out on. I saw nice mass and points and came to full draw and waited as he came right at me and then turned broadside at 12 - 15 yards and watched the arrow hit right on the mark and disappear in the tan coat. We cow called to calm him down and watched him bed 70 yards away and expire.

On day 6 after several close calls, my buddy Steve learned that no calling is sometimes better than calling, especially on satellite bulls that have been beatup on by the herd bull. He took a small 6x6 with lots of mass. I'll add a photo later as I need to upload it first.

Hope all your hunts go well this fall.

Here is my buddies bull, that he tried calling too, it got excited ran in circles and then ran away. The herd bull bugled, we bugled and it ran up the mountain away from us. Then the first bull came back out, we stayed silent and it walked up to Steve for a 15 yard shot!

I keep pinching myself about the buck!

Wow. What a great hunt. Congrats on the success and lessons learned. I read where Chuck Adams kills most of his bulls without bugling.

It's amazing how things come together so quickly. One minute you are thinking about eating a tag and the next you are hoping the tracking job won't take too long. Those are some beautiful, well deserved animals.
