If, you have hired a guide to hunt hogs in the past what have been your success rates. What are your individaul success rates on hogs while paying for a guide? I'm curiuos to find out the success rates of others on the board.

6 pigs on 7 guided hunts. Two of the 6 were 200lb+. These were either in the winter or fall and on property that does not farm. Lots of looking and usually only had one chance.

0 for 2 on unguided private. Conditions during the hunt were marginal.

Over 100% on private land, more than one pig harvested on several trips.

I haven't done the math but I would guess about 15-25% on DIY public land hunts. That would be higher but I started bow hunting only a few years back.

I've killed about 20 hogs since 2003 and my wife has taken 2.

Almost 100% on "Guided Trips". I can only think of one trip I didnt get a pig with a guide. This is over a 15 year time period.

Only 1 hog on DIY hog hunt..Public.

Good Question!

6 for 7 on guided hunts. The one skunk was my fault, I did not check out the guide enough. Many quality guides will guarantee pigs show within shooting distance, if you miss that's your fault. And if they don't show you will get to come back and shoot a pig for no charge. Ask your guide this, if he says something like "hunting is hunting" go somewhere else. Pig hunters who pay for private hunts should not go empty handed. There are enough guides with good land who work hard, these guys are well over 90% and the few who don't get pig should be allowed back. If a guide does not put bacon where your money is, keep looking. Some guides even have a no kill no pay policy. Look around and pick your guide carefully!!!

I'm only been on one guided hunt and did not take a pig home. However, I had several opportunities. The guide never worked with a bow hunter before me, so he didn't know what to expect. I took five shots and had five clean misses. All five opportunities were within the first 4 hours of the morning. For two of the shots, the pigs were on the run. I never should have taken those shots. One shot, I had about a 2 inch sight window behind the front leg and to the left of an oak tree. I just clipped the oak...clean miss. The last two shots I just misjudged the distance. I gave the guide a $100 tip and considered his job done at the end of the day. (Although, the ranch owner did offer me another chance, I haven't taken him up on it yet.)

Same hunt...my brother had a 200# (dressed) pig down within 20 minutes of our arrival at the ranch. He was using a rifle.

Thank you for your replies.
I should have also asked what guides you have hunted with. That way we could see patterns in success or no-success with the different guides. I've never hired a guide due to $$. But I'm 1 for 2 on DIY at FHL. Private land 0 for 1 but missed a 175yd shot.

Been on one guided hunt with Westy a few years back on New Year's eve. Guide had access to a ranch just east of Visalia. We saw one hog the 2 days we were there and I shot the sow running away uphill. The guide was the kid from SF who DFG busted a little later for no guide license. The article on the bust was in the California Outdoor magazine. 100% I guess unless you count us both then we were 50%. We covered a lot of country and I think the place had been shot out. He was charging $200 a head I think it was which was a steal.

This hunt had a close call, when I shot the hog it went down and then bounced back up. As I racked another round and lowered to fire again the kid (guide) stepped across in front of me to run up the hill to the hog. Luckily I saw the kid coming out of the corner of my eye. The .300 would have blown his head off.

The kid appeared to be running out from college to run hunts on a Saturday morning and then back home by nightfall. When we hadn't seen anything by Sat night the kid of got squirmy and asked if we were staying. Well yeah, we didn't drive 6 hours to go home empty handed after just one day, we had paid for the weekend. I guess he never had to put more than 2-5 hours into a hunt since he asked about the local motels and where to stay. Definitely a green hog guide.

This adventure didn't end there, a few months later a warden contacted me about our hunt and a picture on the guide's website. They had me confused with Jesse (yotegetter) who's picture was on the guide's website. They thought I was him and wanted to talk. Jesse is a latino and I'm white so that was easy to straighten out. LOL.

Some of you may remember this kid, he posted on here for awhile. At first he said he was a great guy and wanted to take people hog hunting for free on his grandpa's ranch. Then it was $100. Then it was $200, all the while he kept telling me he wasn't a guide.. When he posted some pics of the area several folks called him out for not having permission to be on the land in the pics. He asked me to remove the pics and he disappeared. When we booked the hunt we had no idea it was the same kid, he ran under at least 3 names that I later found out.

That's my only guided hunt story, I guess it can only get better next time.

Funny you mention that story Jesse. I remember him well. I spoke to him on the phone a few times and was trying to set something up. It never worked it self out and I'm glad it didnt after what happened. When he started posting up, it was a hot topic around here. That was many years ago...Geeez..Time flies!!!!

in florida i have absolutely no idea how many pigs ive killed on public land. then again its a warzone with the pigs down there. there are so many of them that its not even funny. you can honestly take your pic of which one you want. on public land in california im 1 for 6. that one was taken at fort hunter ligget with a humvee on accident. as for guided hunts. im 1 for 1. i went with cedar canyon ranch with my brother in law and will never go anywhere else. the quality of the animals and the service is amazing. they really know their property well. did i mention that i missed a running pig from about 5 yards with three rounds? yeah thats my fault on that one!
