Went for a hog hunt with my Dad and a few friends over the weekend. We hunted a 1800 acre ranch west of Red Bluff.

Had a some of opportunities on Sat. but passed. Had a rust colored hog at about 40yds but could only see the top half of it and didn't want to shot a wet sow so I passed. Also had a Texas heart shot at a boar at about 40yds but again passed as he ran straight away. Went out Sat. evening with Dad to do a little predator hunting and ended up see some more hogs. Dad missed, I don't know how, and I passesd on a 100yd shot because all I had was my .204. Oh well. Went out Sun. morning and made the long hike to where I had seen the hogs on Sat. The hogs were bedded very early due to the full moon so I was hunting the thick stuff. While sneaking up on some Manzanita I notice something outta place. I threw up the rifle and saw a blonde color phase hog bedded. I went down to my knees and glassed the brush with the Swarovski's and picked out three hogs. They were bedded three in a row broadside to me. The first two were laying side by side head to head and the third was a$$ to head to the other two. I would of liked to of taken the blonde hog, due to the color, but had no shot as I would have probably hit the second hog also. The third hog was the only real choice and I had a good shot at the head. I snuck up to about 60yds and put a bullet in the neck at the base of the head. She was a good size sow and tipped the scales at 190lbs. All in all we had a great weekend and got some good eats.

Nice work Deerslam, great story. Looks like you got a relative of your avatar pig? We don't see that many belted pigs here in Beautiful Bradley, we're all enjoying this great story and pix over here at our resort game room.

Tehema Co is the land of belted hogs! And it looks like Slam knows how to find them!

A friend of mine hunted on our property, west of Red Bluff, for a half-day this weekend, and saw no hogs, but he did have a nice picnic with his GF

Way to go, Deerslam.. and I'm really glad to hear your restraint paid off.

Like PWA said, too many people would've taken one of those bad shots... maybe they'd have killed the animal, maybe not, but you did the right thing and still put pork in the freezer!

Thanks.
Yep same ranch. The boar I passed on was also belted. I've seen a multitude of color phases on this ranch.

Jim, wish I could but I get invited to this ranch once a year and haven't even been able to take my kids. Say hi to Joy and the kids.
