I think I will look hard at the new Ruger compact in .308 when my son gets old enough. It has a shorter stock already and a short (16 inch?) barrel, and I can handload the .308 down to about a .30-30 level. Someone else posted about looking for a small .223 for a relative, and the Ruger Compact comes in that caliber, too. Besides, if/when my son (he's only 4 now) outgrew the Compact, I could order a fullsize stock for the Ruger. Use Contender loads with faster powder, and you don't give up as much velocity with the shorter barrel after they get used to light loads.
If you reload, you can just load the .308 you already have lighter and still beat the 7.62 Russian round.
