Flatbroke and I hunted with some friends Sunday morning. We did not get an early start, but we were hunting by 9am. We rolled out in the Ranger, roading 7 dogs on the ground. We worked the edges of cover close to sources of water. There is a river, that is flowing pretty good through the place. It has a large patch of brush and trees that runs along side of it. We had dogs split up, 3 went down stream, and 4 up. We were headed in the direction of the 4. About 30 minutes later we could here dogs baying a couple hundred yards out. We were able to drive to the edge of the brush, within 50 yards or so. We got there within minutes, snapped a couple photos, and got the hog. The older dogs rolled out, we thought there was more than one hog. We messed around in that area for another hour. We got the dogs that were there back, without finding another hog. We still had 3 dogs down stream, so we headed that way. I thought I could hear barking, but wasn't sure. Eventually we found the other 3 dogs, re grouped, and continued to hunt down stream. We had about another half mile of stream with brush to hunt. We were sitting there watching the dogs go in and out of the brush, working the area real hard. The one dog opens up about 100 yards away. She was baying in one spot, then it broke away from us. Then another dog joined in. We raced along side the brush trying to get closer to them. Then they broke back up stream, so we turned around. We got close and stopped. We could see the dogs running around trying to stay on the hog. We could not see the hog though. They broke away from us again. We drove down along the edge of the brush a short ways, and stopped to listen. We could hear the dogs comming towards us. Right then we saw the hog. It was a good hog. Right there where we could see, one of the dogs grabbed it, and made it spin. With in seconds there was a nice fight going. We were not 100 feet away, so we sent in the catch. Couple quick photos, and we were wrapping things up. We had plans to do an evenin hunt so we decided to head back, go get some lunch, and head to the other ranch.
We were going across an open pasture. It had some swampy sections, withy some tall grass. Out of no where, this 250 boar jumps up and takes off running right in front of us. We had all the dogs hooked up, but we couldn't let this go. We started cutting dogs loose as fast as we can. By the time they had gone 200 yards, they caught up to him. He stopped to make his fight. He was backed up in the corner of a fence brace. We sent in the catch. the other dogs were standing there baying him. He saw the catch dog comming, and turned and broke. He ran another 100 yards. The strike dogs got him stopped, and the catch dog hit him. He slammed the catch dog, throwing him in the air, he still made the catch, but was getting thrown around. The other dogs were helping out best they could. We did not have time to get any action shots. We had no idea how big his teeth were. First priority was to get the hog under control. We got there legged him, then things calmmed down a bit. We finished up our business and headed for the truck. It was 2:30pm.
