Did I read that correctly....? You gave a few close friends directions to a false honey hole you had never hunted but wanted to scout, and they ended up scoring there....?[/b]

You've got to love this, I think it's a California thing. The freeways are bad too. No share state. We could change it from "The Golden State" to the "Glutton State" see ya

Well, I don't care what Jesse says. I have secret spots on public land!

They're so "secret", even the game don't know about them.

I think we may have some of the same spots. I'm too lazy to hike to them anymore, though.

When I'm Musky hunting, rather than the GPS location of where a fish was caught, I'd rather have a description of the pattern IE: wind-blown rocks, or sheer drop-off.

Same is true for game hunting. If you know an area well, and find out the hogs (or deer, elk, bears, etc) are hitting the acorns, you should know several spots that hold the mast and plan accordingly. The reason the game is in the area they were found is more important information than the location itself. Just my 2 cents.

I think "easymoney" is about my age or at least he has logged in as many miles on his boots as I did
<
. I remember those days when I sent out many letters to various ranger stations through out known pig areas and yes I did receive a single reply back from a female ranger some where in LP.
Many phone calls and especially many, many, many gallons of gasoline and tons of pair of boots later I figured out where to go. Now I can find them but shooting one is another story!
I did help out many new hunters around places I go but sad to say that many of them have disaponted me and those stories worth another thread.

Someone from this Forum just e-mail me yesterday and I don't know how to reply. Maybe some of you can advise me on this and here it goes,

"What can you tell me about hog hunting at Lake Sonoma ?
I have never been up there,so would welcom any info I can get
..Access..Where to hunt..etc..Thanks..

<
I don't even know who he or she is and don't remember seeing his ID on JHO....
I would at least start by introducing myself and some background and politely ask if I can get some help but....

Maybe I got never-ending pig fever and don't think straight.
I still enjoy this site very much and please keep those pictures coming.....

Its only a secret spot if the animals are there. other then that its just a spot where they got lucky to get a pig or let alone see them. I also been hunting leggett alot of years and guys would say I can't tell you its a secret spot or its over there. If that don't boil some steam and make you pay attention to active signs to be aware of hogs rootings and fresh tracks I dont know what. So lets all stop whining and hunt. I got buddies thats been in Iraq for the last year and wish they were here hunting even if they dont see anything from someone so called secret spot. Can we all just get along !!!! enuff said.

Well, let's see if this will fuel the fire:
If I shoot a pig on public land - say some place in the northern part of Los Padres NF, and I post pics, story and how to get there - will I step on anyones toes?

I assume that most people who have their own honey holes are experienced hunters, who have had some luck in the past, but the guy who doesn't have a honey hole yet is the guy who really need to get his first pig.
And the latter is - IMHO - the guy who should be converted into a life-time hunter and proponent for public land access.

The honey hole off of Rockpile Rd. has been hammered lately by a number of hunters so I guess the secret is out and "someone" will be finding some new hunting partners for breaking the code of honor!

Crack[/b]

LD,
This explains everything,your a CRACKHEAD.
Doggonnit did ya have to tell everyone where my spot was.I thought I was the only one that gets to Rockpile rd. by boat
I was even contenplating inviting you on the next trip to the lake, but on second thought besides chasing your wounded pigs around all day I wouldn't want to have to explain what happened when you decided to dive for a fishing lure in 100 ft. of water.

Secret spot in FHL?

Here it is for everyone to check.

Some 400 yards West of that automatic gate entrace to the hunting zones always has fresh rootings.

Check it out!

Learning someone elses "secret spot" takes the fun out of it. I love hunting way more than shooting I have meat in the freezer and hunt for the fun of getting out of the city and getting away from home for a few days, not because of a neccesity. As long as Safeway is down the street and there is a burrito shack on every corner hunting will not be a physical neccesity for me. But it is a sport that I want to improve on and I believe everytime I go out and find a good root and get on a hot trail I am learning ten times more and becoming a better hunter than had I simply went to a spot on a map and waited. Hogs are an animal that don't stay in a spot that is hunted all the time anyways I am sure most guides will tell you they have to adapt constantly and stay sharp with tracking and terrain judgement to stay in business. Public land is hard hunting and pigs are a smart and tough animals so you have to hunt smart and tough to keep in the game.

I had a secret spot at Lake Sonoma too, but it is no longer secret. You see I made the mistake of telling LD where it was. This year on opening weekend, LD was "camping" with a bunch of guys from the City
<
and they tore the place up!

All joking aside, if it is public land, don't complain is you see foot prints!

Secrets? there are no secrets, there are simply those who know, and those who don't.

As to sharing, I am open to it, have done it, and have had others do it with me.

Generally speaking, I do not think it is fair or appropriate to condemn some for bemoaning the fact that an area they are accustomed to hunting in relative peace has recently seen an increase in hunters as a result of the location being posted on the Internet. Likewise, I do not think it is fair or appropriate to condemn someone for hunting that area as a result of learning of its location on the Internet.

Complaining about the loss of relative privacy for one's favorite area is certainly not the same as trying to squelch conversation about that area in a forum such as JHO, and is contrary to the philosophy of the site. For this reason, I can understand why Jesse and others would offer some of the comments in this topic thus far. However, I think that some have been entirely too dismissive of the concerns that one might have if their spot were to be "discovered."

Public land or not, there are some basic principles at work here:

1. Given the large amount of public land and the relatively small proportion of that land that is accessible to humans, attractive to animals and optimal for hunting, it is not only possible, but certain that some areas are lesser known and of higher quality. I avoid using the term "secret spot" as it implies that it is not known by anyone else, in favor of "honey hole."

2. Where I come from, when you personally learn of a honey hole or localized area by another hunter (as a guest, by invite, personal conversation, etc), you neither divulge that spot to anyone else nor go there without that hunter unless they give you their approval. It matters not whether it is public or private land. Failing to honor this creed and not keeping your Word will get you, at a minimum, a torrent of rather unsavory insults from me.

3. Using Internet forums to solicit information is a fairly quick and reasonably effortless way of determining where hunters have been successful. As such, it invariably provides the opportunity for those with less ethical instincts, dedication, determination, and other favorable habits and characteristics to locate places to hunt. In other words, the Internet will allow for the more seedy elements of the sporting community to descent upon the area en masse.

4. Posting information on the Internet about public land, no matter how large or small the region, will increase the amount of individuals that will frequent it. The degree to which each finds it suitable to them will determine the retention and "permanent" increase in the number and concentration of hunters in that area. Even when assuming that each of these individuals is ethical, polite, etc, the mere increase in people will likely decrease the chances of success or quality of the experience.

Public land or not, a hunter has every right to be saddened when an area they have come to love for its relative seclusion is suddenly made known to the world.

What in the world is FHL??? Hahaha...but really...im serious, I don't know.[/b]

It's a 160,000 acre army fort called Fort Hunter Liggett (hence the FHL) that allows paid public hunts on the weekends. Pretty vast, most hunters wander for awhile, but it's got some good hog numbers. sshhhh, don't tell anyone. Especially people from LA because they'll all bombard it this weekend and we'll never be able to hunt again because they'll kill everything.

I actually receive some e-mails along those lines, and a little worse.

SacFireJT nice new Avitar!
