Tomorrow, after the usual useless morning meetings are over, I'll be taking the afternoon off to go to Lake Sonoma and see if I can find a hog to shoot. Hopefully one of my co-workers can come along. Looks like another cold day but there will be sun and a little partly cloudy. Might be a good day out.

Well, we got up there about 2pm and got the wife registered. My buddy was nowhere in sight, not on his radio and we decided to get going. This was my first time hunting at the lake so I wanted to cover some ground and get the lay of the land, then get back up to the truck before full dark. (hunting downhill always means getting back up to the truck...and that is Lake Sonoma unless you have a boat!)
We had the a nice upslope wind in our favor. We geared up and took off downhill. Lots of old rooting, some more recent but nothing new yet. We slowly made our way down, trying to walk less and look/listen more. Finally made our way down far enough were we figured we could sit and glass a good bit of territory for a bit and still make it back to the truck before full dark. It was effing cold, too. So, I told my wife to sit and watch this one section while I checked out some more territory. Finally found what I was looking for, short of actual piggies, and found some brand new rooting, probably from last night if not the morning. That half moon overnight was very bright. I cast around a bit in that area but nothing happened. I figured I'll need some more time on the ground to figure the place out so I headed back up to the wife and back up to the truck right about dark. Surprised me how fast we made it back. Could've spent more time out. Cut across some FRESH big cat tracks over my boot tracks. That put our heads on a swivel for the rest of the walk uphill. Saw some nice fat does and one huge buck as well. That was cool. We had two does dead to rights withing range of my recurve as well. That was very cool.
It was still better than working and five hours of comp time well spent. Oh, and the lady at the counter said there were 21 hunters there.

The place is getting pounded! I've only hunted it once this year, but a buddy has been out alot and has only seen a few pigs right at dark. Either got to be really lucky or cross a fence or two (not recommended)

yeah, that's what I thought. It was a good day to be there. The first clear sunny day after brutal rain, hail and cold. I think the pigs were out the night before with the bright half moon. From the sign I saw that was very fresh it was either that night or first thing in the morning.
yeah, 21 hunters on a midweek day...plus a cat active during the day.
I saw about half a dozen trucks with boat trailers so maybe some went out on boats, some may have went around to Yorty Creek. We didn't see any other hunters at on the area we were in.
