I see them crossing highway 25 below Hollister every year on my way home from quail hunting. I'll usually stop and catch one for my niece so that she can freak her mom out.
For the adverage person, there bite is about like a bee sting.

It just depends on the individual when they are irritated they will have their abdomen raised or if really upset lean back on it and raise their front legs and show off their fangs. Most are pretty mellow.

I saw one going across the road in the Sequioas.
