Taz, the Fallow Deer antlers are very unique. I have always liked them. Thanks for sharing. Are there other deer species on the Island of Tasmania ? What other game species can you hunt there ? If the farmers want them gone, does that provide opportunites for the hunters ? Are Fallow Deer native to the island ? What do the wildlife biologist have to say.

Cheers for your interest Jim.
Their are no other species of deer on the Island.
We can hunt Kangaroo's,Wallabies,Rabbits,Feral cats(awesome fun to whistle in),Hares,Ducks (although duck hunting here is a painfull process due to radical leftwing freaks standing in the middle of the lakes with air raid sirens and touting all gun owners to be rambo's,and the community at large thinks the same way including the Government).

We had a US biologist come down 5 years back.He formed a Game management committee telling the farmers the hunters could reduce the numbers of animals by 2 thirds and if implemented correctly (shoot only monsters/and cull runty bucks) and have a 2 doe 1 buck ratio we would see a vast improvement in antler quality. What that has done (including drought) has exploded the population of deer on farmers crops and has trippled numbers in 5 years, with no bettering of trophy animals. They are not native to the island. They were introduced in the early 1900's.

None of this has been benificial to the hunting population at large at all.Their are a few LARGE farms on the island and they have all the deer on their land. The property I hunt 11,000 acres has 45 full time hunters. The surounding hills are to rough and steep for Fallow deer (as they love crops and open fields) so the Government has provided people access to surounding land (Forestry owned land) and their are 400+ hunters scrambling arround 1000 acres of crap territory. These hunters see the deer on the Farms and constantly poach, tresspass over the boundary in search of bucks.I could not blame them for doing that at all.But will myself give them a big verbal serve and take their buck if I catch them(caught 2 this year). The penalty is loss of Gun liscence and 4x4.They will never hunt again (sad)......

The government just wants to please Farmers by reducing numbers. It would take my firearms in an instant. This island could be the best Fallow hunting on earth if the farmers could make money out of the deer. But instead of making people pay for a hunt,or setting up propper guides and services it is now trialing commercial hunting of the animals. In time their will be no deer, they are infact ferral.:patiotic-wavin-flag It's a crying shame. The further the Government and wildlife bio's stay away the better. For the hunters and the deer. This system down this way would make a few Americans/Canadians cry. It's totaly pathetic how it's managed. It's actualy turned 80% of hunters into poachers. One day when the deer are gone I wont have a reason for owning a high powered firearm and this I believe is the untimate goal.

We need,Rangers,Ballots, alloted parcells of land,Tag draws....But it will be total open season (one day,I believe) because the Government would rather sit on a bicycle with no seat.

Take care guys.Happy hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well that is too bad Taz. It looks like a beautiful place from the pictures online. Maybe one day the government will wake up and realize the opportunity and resources they have and use some good science instead of being influenced by the extremists.

Fight for the right to keep your firearms. I fear we are heading down the same path here in the States with that socialist Obama we have for a president.

Well anyway keep sending the shed pics while you can. They are cool.
