I read the One Track/Eight Track post and could not be happier for them.
This post is just an FYI for the JHO trip in May. You guys should have a lot more opportunities than the wild pig management hunt last weekend. The pigs had no reason to move - water and food everywhere. My buddy and I got lucky to find a really small canyon on Friday holding about 20 hogs. I had a stalk and shot but missed – time to go from iron sights to a scope (30-06 BLR). I also busted a big boar under my feet but could not shoot through the Oak trees between us.
We hunted the North side. When we left on Sunday the ranch staff said the hunter success was at 13% for both sides. They let us know that it was almost 65% for the December hunt. They recommended the May and June hunts when the pigs have to move more.
I have no regrets. I had my chance and did not make it happen. I loved driving the roads and was proud of my Jeep. I saw Elk, Deer, and two Bobcats 15 feet from me. I slept under the stars and most importantly cleared my head of my job and “problems”. Being there put everything into perspective and I came home a better husband.
Regardless of success ratio I recommend Tejon to anyone who wants to/ needs a reality check. It is unbelievable that a place so magnificent exists just outside of LA. Forget about what it costs to pay to hunt for the weekend. You will be more productive at work, a better person, husband/wife, mother, father etc. My two hours with my shrink costs more and produces less than the time to think in the beautiful outdoors of Tejon. To have the freedom to drive wherever you want on 100,000 acres is unprecedented in this day and age in California.
To all of those going on the JHO hunt in May – don’t just measure your hunt on whether or not you kill a pig. Meet the people, BBQ some good dinners, drive the roads, and think about what is really important in your life.
I don’t post very often so I hope I have not said too much. Though I do think Speck’s effort to put together the May JHO event will benefit those who go beyond killing a hog.
