I got a pretty cool Xmas/B-Day gift today. The wife gave me an IOU slip for the May Tejon JHO Hunt. When I was living in California (5 yrs Ago), I did the 2nd Annual JHO Hunt at Tejon. It will be nice to get back to the ranch.... +1 Boyzzzz

Bryan, it'll be good to see you again... same for all the other regulars.

Rule on UTVs is, as you thought, it must have a steering wheel. I'm pretty sure you'll also need to carry insurance on it, but you'd need to contact the ranch for specific details.

Tejon is a great place to hunt hogs. Lots of open county to explore. Since speck has the South Side reserved for the JHO Hunt, you would have plenty of room. The area is HUGE!!!! The $450-$550 price is well worth the hunt and hangin around camp. I think I will make the trek down from Reno this year....
I would love to go. I know one of the guides up there and get a lot of huge hogs from there come through my shop, but for that price, I could go on a one-on-one guided hunt for pigs that guarantees I see some to shoot at. One of these days I'll save up and go just to hang out with you all and see the place I've heard so much about. For now, I'll just be jealous. LOL.

I have not hunted this hunt before. You mentioned the rules are the same as last year.Is there somewhere I might find these rules?

Bowhunters?

Does anyone attempt these JHO hunts with Bow and Arrow?

I would have to borrow a riffle from my dad; but that's not an major issue. I was thinking he might come along too.

Personally, I don't have a lot of experience so I see this as an opportunity to meet some great people and buy into a lot of knowledge.

Yes they do, but if the wind is crazy it can take a rifle to get a shot. I would bring both and don't forget to practice with the rifle using the same bullets you plan on hunting with. So many people bring a rifle with them that they have not shot the copper bullets through before the hunt and then they wonder why they keep missing the pigs.
Copper is completely different than lead, if you buy factory loads it can take several types of loads/manufactures/weights to make it work. If you reload it just takes time and patience to work up a accurate load. I have done this years ago and I'm very happy with the accuracy on all of my calibers with copper.

Good luck and hope to see you there!

You can also hunt with a pistol and challenge yourself.

If you want to do some scouting from your desk go to Bing, click maps and type in Lebec, CA. Click on the Birdseye view and your in business. The Ranch is east of the Lebec service road. Follow bear trap rd until it ends and your in the thick of it for the south side. Its sooooo clear you can spot the pigs on the hill side!

Also the ranch has 2 new gates up on the main road. One just past the lake and the other right at squirrel road so don't take your eyes off the road otherwise it could end badly.

Speck,

I'm in again, probably with 3-4 more.

Thanks for organizing,

Lots of interest, that's cool!

A couple of additional notes.

First and most important, I forgot to include this in the first post... THE DEADLINE FOR REQUESTING APPS IS APRIL 24

Aside from that, I'd like to ask that, if you're not sure if you can make it, please don't send off for an application packet until you are sure. We're still several months out from the hunt, so you have time to get sorted out.

And here's the deal... I pay for the postage on these things out of my own pocket. Sure, the price of a postage stamp may not seem like much, but consider that I'll generally send out between 100 and 200 packets every year, and end up with less than 50 hunters who actually attend the event. I'm not asking for anything here, except for folks to take that into consideration before you request a packet.

Thanks.

Just curious Phil. My suggestion is to scan the application packet into a .PDF file and put it online for people to download. That way it save your postage expense.

This look like a perfect opportunity for a noob like myself. It seems like most people are friendly enough to help each other out.

Any chance I can tag along and learn the ropes from some of you?
