I went on the hunt and should have had my pig the first night but I got a case of pork fever and choked big time. The next two days I didn't see much but they around. i passed up a shot at a big sow cause she was nursing a couple little ones. I haven't gone one hour without thinking about the chance I had at a nice boar. But i'm going on the next one. For $300 it's the best deal going and Tejon is a beautiful place to hunt.

Any idea what the overall success rate was (putting something in the freezer not just having a good time which is still success in my book)?

I think it was about 20 hogs killed to 52 hunters. Fog and rain moved in right at daylight on Sunday and you couldn't see past your rifle barrel, so that day was wasted.

Does the Tejon Ranch have a website?  I have looked but did not find one.

I hunted the Ham Slam last May. It was a blast.  three pigs for three guys.  My buddy took the $500 prize with a 250# sow. I got a 189# sow, and she was excellent eating.  I couldn't swing the December hunt with a new baby girl in the family.  However, I'm looking good for the February hunt.  It's a beautiful ranch, with nice folks, and lots of hogs.

One Track    Welcome to Jesses Forum. How much did you pay for the Tejon hunt? Did they give you maps? Were you restricted to a certain area?           Thanx      Fubar

FUBAR,

Thanks for the welcome.  Nice hunting page. Nice to  have found a forum with some Southern California action.

Last May, they charged $250. I noticed they  increased it to $300. I think it's a great deal, especially if you get a hog.  The people were nice, however, you are totally on your own up  there.  There is South Ranch and North Ranch.  I think you choose on your application.  We went in totally blind.  And, they kind of leave you that way.  No map.  No guidance.  I was trying to get some scoop from the people who work there.  Their lips were sealed. It seemed like they were told not to say anyting. Probably because they want to sell some guided hunts at $400 per day. Which is fine with me. It was fun driving the ranch and looking for sign. The place is HUGE.  We never ran into any boundries or locked gates. Those hogs can do some serious damage.

I was told by another hunter that the North Ranch is known for bigger hogs, and the South is known for having more hogs.

Here's a good  tip. They didn't open the gate until 12noon. (Don't know if it's the same for February.)  We  were so  excited to get there and set up camp, that we pulled in around 7:30am, which meant getting up at 2:00am for the drive from San Diego.  Well, we sat at the gate for 4 1/2 hours, begging them to  let us in.  I'm sleeping in next time.

Thanks to Jesse for the great website. Looks like a ton of work.

Fubar, I was at the last two hunts at Tejon. It is now $300.00 for the hunt and no they don't have any maps. But I'm telling you it's one of the most fun hunts I've been on in a long time. The ranch is now divided into 3 sections. North, South, and the desert. I actualy found the personal to be very helpful, but no they did'nt give any specifics. We saw over 150 hogs, and my buddy got a 160lb sow. I had plenty of chances but got to greedy for my brithches (again...). The Feb. hunt will be a little different because of the road factors. The more snow the less open or sane roads to travel. The roads can be bad in good weather. The last hunt two hunters ran of the road down a 200ft bank and ended up in the hospital. (Last I heard they were fine). Go you'll have a blast, and possibly get some tasty meat to boot.

The thing is ...this ranch is huge and a map really doesn't matter that much. There are no closed roads (usually) and with the pigs on this ranch you never know where they are going to be. It's not like hunting pigs in other areas...you can't pattern them, you can't count on them being in one spot or the other. You just have to put in miles either on foot or truck. So drive till you see sign and work from there. There are pigs in just about every corner of the ranch. We even saw about 15 piglets in our camp just running around not 25 yards from us. So don't worry about maps like you would in other areas.

I did'nt get to go on the  Dec. hunt. I'am going to try to go on the next one.I have hunted the ranch on 3 pigorama's and 1 guided hunt. Saw lots of hog's every time. You can get
maps of the ranch at mapquest or mapblast.com. They are'nt  real good because you can't select the area to print.I have the BLM State Explorer CD that gives you a pretty good map with most the roads.Next time you go to Tejon let me know ahead maybe I can post it or something.

The next hunt is Feb8-10. I already signed up. The success rate on the last hunt was 4%. I learned a lot from the last hunt and will get my hog this time. Happy New Year
