I've never hunted the area. Is it $300 per person? Or per group? How many per group?

That 4% success rate that was in Western Outdoors News may have been a misprint. The article said that 132 hunters took 61 pigs. So, maybe it should have been 40%? They did say that they expected it to be higher but the hunting on the 3rd day was just about non-existant because of heavy fog.

Some thoughts on the Tejon.
Hogs are everywhere, no real difference from north to south side of ranch from what I've seen and heard.
South side is about 1 hour closer to people in L.A., the north side ranch you have to go over the Grapevine and then 1/2 hour off the freeway.

I'm going on the Feb 8th Pig O Rama. Last May I went with a rifle. This year I'm thinking I should take my bow. Can I do that during the Pig O Rama? If so, wondering how and where on the ranch to hunt those hogs with a bow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be at the hunt also. I don't know about the south or the Desert end but in the North section they have a spot for archery only. Almost all of Tejon Canyon is off limits to guns of any kind. Tejon Canuon is a BIG canyon. I was there in Dec. and saw a few hogs taken by archers (we didn't get in till late and left early...). The method I'd use would be spot and stalk or if you can figure there path try an ambush, there is plenty of cover. either way the ranch is a beautifull place to spend the weekend, beats work or honey-do's:-} Maybe we'll see ya there...Good Luck

Thanks for the info. I'll be there with a buddy. We'll be on the South Ranch, in a dark blue Chevy with a Snugtop camper. I think I'll take a rifle and the bow. Last year I took a nice sow. This year I'm hoping for a nasty tusker to put on the wall. It seemed in May, that the hogs exposed themselves a few hours in the morning, and a few hours before dark. I'm thinking I would like to get down into the deep thick stuff with my bow in the mid day. Maybe riverbeds, waterholes...I don't know. We never had to venture into the thick stuff last year. I'm sure it will be another good time. I can't believe they won't allow a campfire. It's going to be a cold one.

there is camp area's for the respective areas. Most of the people I've seen have trailers. Good luck up on the North Ranch. I picked the south because I got familiar with it last May. However, I'm wondering what I'm missing on the north side. I hear ya when it comes to hittin' the hay. A nice steak, a few beers, and I'm out! Did you get a chance to see any elk, lions, bears, turkeys, etc up on the north ranch? We saw several deer, but that was it. I didn't know if I should be sleeping with my 44 in my hand or not. However, if there's a hog hanging in the tree, that would be a nice deterant. Have fun.

I was on a bow-only hunt and it was in an archery section of the ranch. Truthfully I don't know which part of the ranch that is! I think they may place you in this section if you bring your bow but but they are divided. I'm really not sure on the Pig-O-Rama rules because I've been to Tejon only once on my archery hunt (its wasn't the Pig-O-Rama). On my hunt Don gave us several choices depending on what we were looking for. (just a shot at any pig, big boars, rough country, etc.) He directed me to an area where he had seen a herd that week. I saw pigs in the early morning and evenings. Most guys didn't even hunt mid-day because they're not active unless its overcast. I didn't have to but I would have if I didn't get my sow the 1st morning. If you cover some ground, walk through the woods like a ghost, you'll get your pig with a bow. Get in shape though as I'm sure you are from chasing those does in SD! lol

Are you familiar with the Los Padres National Forrest? I'm wondering if there are hogs on the opposite side of the Interstate, across from Tejon. Can the pigs cross the Interstate there? That would be a cheap hunt on public land. Also wondering about the deer hunting there. If there are deer, does it get hit real hard. Just curious.

There are some hogs there, but a lot of them are on private land. Tejon also owns land on that side, along with some others. I've never heard of people hunting hogs on that side on the public, but there are deer if you want to put in the work. ( It's tough hunting on that side), but they take some excellent bucks there. A friend took a 26" HUGE buck there three years ago, but he is an animal. I'm in good shape but....no way could I make that hunt. And yes it gets a ton of presure, so much so that I don't hunt it anymore. If you go, hunt the last couple of weeks of the season...it's usually the best.
( Make sure of what's private and public...even F&G can't tell sometimes).

I hunted the opener of rifle in San Diego on Palomar, trying to protect a nice 3x3 that we have been trying to take with a bow. Thirty people showed up at daylight. Some folks had doe tags. Three does snuck up behind my buddy and I, and the shooting started. We were only 30 yards from those does and people 300 yards away were shooting. All I had was an orange hat. I was truly scared for my life. It was way too crowded. Not fun.
