I went this past weekend and Friday afternoon was heavy fog and steady drizzle. Hunted hard for 5 hours but couldn't see much. Saturday morning was clear and windy. I went down a canyon bottom, which gave cover from the wind and about a mile in I was moving toward a pile of rocks when a loan boar came out of the heavy cover of the hill side. I dropped down and took a rest on the rocks and dropped him quartering away from only 56 yards. At 7:00a.m. it couldn,t have worked out any better. At 126# and a good layer of fat he should be some good eatin.

congratulations, what part of the ranch were you on? I hunted the north end and saw lot's of hogs. For some reason I've turned into the worst shot in California. I missed three great opertunities. Shame on me. My partner killed a nice 180lb boar with 2.5" cutters. Even though I didn't take a hog I had a great time. The roads were real slick on Friday and Saturday. We had chains on all four and could not get to some of the places we usually hunt. It was pretty hairy driving. I guess there were about four or five stuck trucks on Friday and Saturday, some of them REAL stuck.
Anyway glad to hear of your'e success, and I hope you had a great time on the ranch. It truly is a beautiful place.

 A couple of issues back we posted a story about the Tehama Wildlife Area Pig Hunt and informed you that the California DFG was not getting many applications for this year's hunt.
If you put in for the hunt and were drawn, we also want to share this recently received information with you so someone at home is not warming the frying pan because they think it is going to be a slam dunk for you to bring a pig home:

Tehama Pig Hunt Facts

• Success rate is usually about 1%.
• Highest pig harvest for a season was 19.
• Generally, 5-10 pigs are taken each year during the hunts.
• There are not a lot of pigs on the property but there are some pigs.
• This year 1,495 applications were submitted for the 320 permits.
• All hunt periods were filled.
• The area was expanded not because there were more pigs but because pigs move around.

Kernhunter, I was on the South side. I have a spot where you park right off the pavement and walk in. You're right the roads were real slick. I had a great time. I even got home and skinned the pig in time to make it to my kids basketball game. The next one is in April. I'm saving up for it right now. Were you shootin off hand or from a rest?

The best I could do was a sitting position, and I was all locked in. I truly believe I was shooting over all the hogs I shot at. Funny thing is, I shot a yote on the trot at 115 yards and cut him in two, but couldn't hit a hog at 60 yards, go figure.
By the way I found out last night the largest hog on the north end was 261 lbs.

After dragging 126# out a mile to my truck I'm glad that it was not 1 pound heavier.

I was there, on the south ranch.  Wow, Friday was brutal.  We had a hairy slippery ride on some of those off camber dirt roads. We had close call.  Ended up with the rear passenger wheel hanging over a steep drop off.  We put chains on the front, put rocks under the tires, and actually tied the truck off to a tree with all the rope we had.  We pulled it off.  Hairy!  I was looking for a jackpot hog, or a nasty boar for the wall, and passed on several nice 150# - 180# hogs.  Ended up shooting a 90# sow on Sunday at noon.  My partner took 130 lber on his first big game hunt. When I took my 90 lber, I had a 180 ish sow in my scope but the wind was doing 70 mph and I couldn't hold on her, nor  could I find a solid rest.   The 90 lber just kept hanging around as if disoriented with the wind.  So, being Sunday at noon, I thought it wise to take something home to Mama. The sow was only at 10 yards, and I pulled out my 357 mag and shot her. It seemed to be at least a 90% success rate on the South Ranch.  I saw a lot of hogs come out of them there hillls.  The big pig on the south side at 2pm on Sunday was a 243#.  Great time.  Hope to go in May.
