Tejon doesn't allow loaded guns in vehicles, at least it says that in their hunt brochure. I've seen several people inside vehicles firing away at ground squirrels there. Reminds me of that bowhunter who posted here about getting lit up on a hillside.

Thanks Jesse. I figured they probably had a rule against that.

For those who haved practiced it too, it's not all that difficult to quickly load a revolver with a speed loader.

Wow, I didn't realize that my story would create so much scrutiny about my actions. I am a law abiding, ethical person and hunter. My story was for others to read about a harvest under conditions not so normally encountered.

Think what you may, but the pig was legally taken, with the hunter out of his vehicle and off the road.

No more stories from me.

It's a tough crowd. I'm not gonna try to ease the blow, but sometimes you just have to have a thick skin. Your buddy essentially jumped out of the vehicle with a loaded pistol and started blasting away, based on your story... and a lot of guys are gonna call you on that.

Doesn't help that a lot of these folks look at that picture of the hog in the headlights, not yet gutted, and it raises a lot of suspicion about just how much "shooting light" was really left.

What I'm saying is, you kinda set yourself up for a thrashing. If you post a story, it behooves you to pay careful attention to the details... especially when it comes to ethical and legal considerations. Ask anyone here who's posted up, even accidentally, about a hunt that falls outside the bounds of safety, common sense, ethics, or the law... and they got the same treatment as you, or worse.

If I saw a hog by the road, would I get out and try to shoot it? Heck yes. Most of us would, as you pointed out. But certain stories sometimes need a little editing. I'm sure there are many on this list who've done things they wouldn't share in writing with a global audience. Discretion is the better part of valor.

Anyway, hope you don't go running off, because that's not what this group should be about. You seem like a good enough guy, and it's obvious you dig hog hunting. Hang around, learn a little and teach a little. It's a great place... just a little rough around the edges.

Thanks for the story. Don't let the shoot first, ask questions later attitude bother you. That's pretty much the norm on most message boards.

Plenty of thinking done on this end before posting...

Would I have "jumped out and done the same?"... no, I would have still be far from the truck if there was still shooting light left.

The fact that multiple shots were taken at different pigs "with very little shooting light left" would lead anyone to believe that this was just road hunting. You can't have it both ways - either illegal for shooting too late or not very smart for driving the roads at the most productive time of the day for hunting.

Nothing illegal about it necessarily, just not the way that a lot of us like to hunt.

Hey Vinswitch, ya gotta have tough skin around here! Most folks here are great upstanding people and will call foul when they think there has been one.

I have learned a great bit from the folks here about what to do and not to do. I am human and make mistakes myself and when I post a story or the like on here if I did something questionable these great folks let me know. To the same I let them know as well if I see something that ain't just right or sit right with me. I don't take it personal, I take it as a learning tool and don't let it happen again.

With everyone that will speak up and let you know when you did something wrong or questionable you don't have to justify your actions to anyone buy yourself and your hunting partner. How would I be able to justify to my kiddo's carrying around a loaded handgun in a moving vehicle while hunting...my kids know it's illegal here and they will call me on it. I proud to say that! I try to set the best example I can for my kids or other hunters around me. Like I said though I'm not perfect and these folks here at JHO would let me know so that I can hopefully learn and move on.

Great story but the whole loaded gun while hunting in a vehicle is to much for me as well, my daughter even mentioned "that's not right daddy, why did he do that".

Speed loaders etc...for the driver to be able to grab the handgun open then load (speed loader 'n all) then take aim and shoot two shots off before you could even camber a round is next to impossible. MY OPINION and I'm no expert either!

Anyhow don't let these yahoo's stop you from posting up other great stories just keep in mind that these folks out here will call you if they see something not right.
