Hey there everyone,

Finally, after 10 or so wonderfully beautiful, but pigless weekends at the Tejon, I was able to take this bute on Saturday morning (6/19/04). Lucky for me, my girlfriend had her "eyes peeled" that morning and spotted her and some smaller pigs moving up the side of a pretty steep hillside. Not thinking twice, I used the bed of my truck as a rest and squeezed one off at 184 yards. Before the sound of my .257 cleared the canyon, she was rolling down the hillside near my truck. I was using Hornady's new Light Magnum 117 gr. SST bullets, I couldn't have asked for better performance. It was a wonderful morning to say the least; especially since my girlfriend told me, when I had first met her, she would never consider being around guns, let alone hunting wildlife. That morning she had not only spot the pig, she helped gut her too! Damn was I a happy camper to say the least. Now all I hear is, "When can we go again?!" Anyway, hope ya'll like the pic's.

The wet sow your talking about only had two wet nipples, which were well on their way to drying. The pigglets were all well over 20 #'s, all old enough to be on their own. And thanks for the kind words!

ps about the bed of the truck, when all there is is the ground or the bed railing for support, with that shot placement at 184 yds., I'll take the bed railing any day.

Nature Driven,

Welcome to Jesse's and congrats on your first Tejon pig. I got mine at the Ham Slam last month. Way to go getting your girlfriend out there with you. Women hunters make the sport prettier. I would be amazed if my wife decided she wanted to go out with me one day. Maybe the two of you can make next year's Ham Slam.

Congrats on the shot and the ethical consideration of using the best rest to humanely harvest the animal.

Some folks must not get out much - the truck rest is a staple every place I hunt given the proper ethical circumstances.

NatureDriven, glad to hear the young ones didn't have stripes.

There was a report at the last ham slam that just sickend me when I heard of it. Speckmisser I'm sure could fill you in on it. They were'nt part of the JHO Ham Slam group but took a wet sow the weekend we were all there.

The Tejon Ranch is beautifull and sharing it with your lady friend just makes it that much more better. My wife and I love spending time on the ranch. Maybe we will bump into you two sometime and welcome to

Take your shot - take your chances. The taking of game from a vehicle is contrary to the F&G code. Many wardens interpret the reg' as 'in/on/or from' a vehicle.

Nice pig and a great shot at 180 yards. And good to see that you are introducing your girlfiend to the sport of hunting. I have tried to get my wife interested, but have not had much luck. The issue is mainly the 4:30 am wakeup calls and the lack of "proper" tolets while out in the field. Oh well, gives me a chance to get out with my buddies.

I too was under the impression that shooting from or on a truck was illegal.

Nice pig though.

Thanks for all the great feedback! This however is my third pig taken from Tejon. By the greatful hand of God, my family was blessed with the oppertunity to join Jim Mathews Explorer Member lease last year, and boy have we been enjoying it.

You know about the girlfriend, I make it perfectly clear before there is any chance of a first date that if my girl cant wake up with me to join me in the field, something I love more than any other, than there is no possible way we would last a lifetime. Now I do believe I have found the one.

SuperDuty - Stop me anytime you see me on the ranch to say hello. I drive a Red Ranger w/ black rims. I would love to meet you and the wife. I believe my brother has mentioned you to me in the past. His ID on here is JAEHUNT.

If anyone is interested in viewing some pretty incredible wildlife pictures from the Tejon follow this link and click on Tejon Wildlife:

Or would like to see 2 other pigs from the Tejon follow the same link and click Tejon Wild Pigs.

Any how, thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I look forward to hunting with any of you, any time!

Also, thanks for the heads up about using the trucks bed rail as a rest.

NatureDriven, thouroughly enjoyed the pics. There is no doubt my wife and kids love the ranch. It's a shame there hicking all the prices up next year. Just might be enough to shut the gate on us.

We are taking full advantage of this year to fill the freezer just incase. I will have the whole family on the ranch Fourth of July weekend and we are looking to take two more pigs with any luck. That will make the total count 2 for me and 1 for the wife this year. That will also be my wifes second pig ever so I'm very excited to get her on one again. Don't give up on your expectations of having your mate with you in the field. Take it from me, it's most rewarding. Let us know if you will be around. I know where you guys stay so maybe we could pop a cold one and enjoy some good conversation one evening. Tell your brother I said hello and hope everything is going well for him since his gradutation from law school.

This has been researched by our hunting group, chock full of lawyers and cops, long, long ago.

Using a parked vehicle as a rest, with your feet grounded, is not contrary to Section 251. This has been run past "many wardens" for "many" years.

I'm sure there are issues if public roads and/or buildings involved, but that's not our situation.

We like our chances - very much indeed!!

I know I am reading into this but sounds like another story about driving around looking for pigs. When you find them, you get out and shoot.

Maybe I don't get it but what is the camo for?
