Well, I just got a packet for Tejon's hunting programs. Among other changes, the POR price is increasing to $400. I guess we all knew it was coming, but there ya go... it's official now.

The bright side is, that the ranch will be closed to members during the POR, so only registered POR hunters will be in the field (of course members who choose to register for the POR can hunt). This may help a bit with pressure, since it will reduce the number of folks driving around shooting.

Other notes of interest...

New policy at the ranch is that a WOUNDED animal counts as your harvest. Not sure how they'll handle that for the PORs and such, except that I'd imagine they'll have to rely on the honor system. I hope some of us still have that much honor... and that we can "help out" those who don't.

Bottom line, don't shoot if you can't kill. Pass up those 500 yard running shots. And learn to track.

Also, they have added a guided, antlerless deer hunt for $650. This is now their cheapest guided hunt.

For more info, contact Tejon Ranch's Lana Van Meter at 661-663-4210.

They want $20,000 for an Elk hunt. All of their prices went up.

That's actually a valid point, Pitdog.

So how many of you other guys think you'll blow off the PORs due to the increase? $400 is pretty much the going rate for a guided hunt that offers a much higher chance of success than unguided at Tejon. One of the big reasons for the success of the PORs was the bargain basement cost.

Personally, I'm not faulting Tejon for the increase. I'm pretty sure the market will bear the price, and it's still not a bad way to get in a good, self-guided hog hunt in primo habitat. But... it's gonna be harder to justify the expense when I know that the same $400 can get me on a ranch in Parkfield or King City and almost guarantee a hog.

Anyway, I'll be working with Barbara to plan next year's JHO Ham Slam, since Tejon is still the only place where we can hold such an event with this number of hunters.

Speck, when I spoke to Lana yesterday about the increase in prices it was also mentioned that the Ranch will only be closed to non POR members for the POR's. The Ham Slams will be an exception to the rule. They also will only be offering a two pig limit to the lease holders. There are other restrictions on adding a pig to a guided hunt. This has to be done prior to the hunt starting. I will leave this one alone being the more I think about where all this is going in our future has got me alittle hot.

The POR is a great hunt on a great ranch, period. The price a hunter is willing to pay is a personal thing, like they always say: shop around. That being said a $100.00 increase? 33% ? seems a bit much to me.

might not keep me from going once a year, but twice a year? definately not!

I agree that the price increase is too steep. Wish I could raise my radio advertising rates 33% and get away with it. Whatever the market will bear I guess. They will only have to sell 75 spots, instead of 100, to break even, with a chance to make another $10k. Time will tell.

I love that ranch. However, the rate hike will force me to hunt elsewhere.

Bummer.

The timing seems kind of odd. It appears that the POR success rates are decreasing, but yet they want to raise prices 33%?
There are some good guided hunts with much higher success rates, for $400.00. I'm gonna miss Tejon. It's one of the nicest places you can hunt in California.

I agree with everyone who has posted.
That being said, lets not let this bum out this years Ham Slam.

Now we'll just have to hunt that much harder.

I don't know about you guys but my anuall review went something like this" 0% increase, 200% increase on work load, and your lucky to have a job".
<
This really sucks.

One Rocky Mountain Elk for $20,000.00. The corporate pukes that have probably never held or owned a gun are probably compt those hunts. I don't see how anybody could even afford such a hunt. I came up on two nice bulls and several cows on Tejon just a few weeks ago holding my hi-power. Could you imagine taking that shot. $20,000.00 and all over. Why couldn't I have seen those elk last year on my New Mexico Elk hunt?? No meat in the freeezer.

Well, seems to me that for $400, you can fly to Texas on a discount fair and take a hog or two for about the same price....(well, almost).

Did you guys see Tejon is also offering guided varmint hunts......For $1000 you get 2 days of hunting squirrels, coyotes, and bobcats, and 2 nights in a cabin. You're guaranteed an opportunity to take a bobcat OR coyote.

If any of you guys are interested I'll guarantee you a coyote for half that.

I'm sorry to say, at those prices the HamSlam will probably be my last Tejon hunt. For the same money I'll got to the Paso Robles area and buy my next pig from a guide.

You read my mind, Bill. I've had several invites to go down there, I just haven't been able to. Even had a few invites to a huge place in east Texas, the good ol' boy that owns the place said I can shoot deer & hogs till I wear out the barrel. One of these years....

A 33% increase is definately excessive... but I'll more than likely keep going...I only live 40 minutes from the ranch...the cost getting a room and an extra 3 hours of driving at $2.25 a gallon for gas eats quickly into that $100.00 price hike.

Along the same line as Dilprxo. I will not do the 3 hour drive for a 400 dollar unguided hunt. So probably not going to be doing any more POR. More than likely, I will be visiting Choppers place more often.

For $400 I'll go on a guided hunt. $300 is the max trespass I'd pay to go off on my own. There is a lot of competition in the $400 range, not too much competition in the $300. I still can't wait for the Ham Slam!!!

[Homer Voice] Hmmmmmmm...Saaaatchmo, er'Ah' I mean........ TEXAS !!! Yeah! That's what I meant Texas.

Seriously Guys, A Texas Hunt sounds like an awesome Idea and I think we should just make it happen.

I know it's just gonna make me wanna move there all the more. Heck!
I think my company even has a couple of buildings there.

It's only a day and a half drive with two or more people and My truck will seat 5 comfortably.
