Will be hunting Tejon this weekend with some buddies from work - anyone else going? First time there - should be a blast. We nabbed the area 4 cabin, which is 13 or 14 miles in, so it will be nice to roll out of the cabin and start hunting.

Sounds like fun. Good luck with the hunt, and post up your pictures and stories!

Let us know how the roads are too.

Thanks - will do. Good, cool weather and a new moon should help. We are archery hunting on the North side so we should be able to get into pigs! Hopefully the roads aren't too bad - hasn't rained for a while and good sun and wind should dry most of it up. I will let you know!!

Unfortunately, you heard wrong! We got blanked as well. We saw over 100 pigs, but couldn't get on them. Got to 45 yds on one, started to pull the arrow back and he winded us and took off - that was as close as we would get. The only dead thing we saw was the turkey the bobcat nailed (the cat was living under the cabin). I agree - if we were rifle hunting, I would have tagged out by 5pm the first day. We stalked our butts off trying to get to some large groups (30 - 35 hogs), but ..... Like you said, it is amazing country and I can't wait to go back. Well worth the money to get to hunt that area. The cabin was great. Nice to roll out of the sack and start hunting. Had all the amenities. Sorry I didn't get time to say "hi". I saw you pull in and then you were back and forth with your buddies with the trailer, etc. when they pulled us in for orientation, then hustled us off so we could beat the road conditions going in to the cabin. Take care and good luck on the next hunt!

Hey Wingbone...

Thought i would post a couple pics. from my hunt even though i did not tag a pig!

I think I ran into you guys up around the top of Martinez Ridge (I had that old Power Wagon)...

Similar experience in seeing but not getting a chance to "engage". Lots of deer, bobcat, turkey, etc. though...

BTW...we took that bottom road out the next day (from the top of the ridge). Crikey...we missed the "lift road" out of that canyon and blew our entire afternoon getting out. Must have crossed that creek 60 times.

Guys...have GOOD maps and a GPS if you're not familiar! Thanks to Cody for bailing us out and leading us out after dark once we got to the bottom...all the way at the north end.

All the things you've heard about Tejon are probably true and then some. ESPECIALLY about the hazards of the high roads. :skeered:
Encountered axle deep snow drifts in the shade and VERY slick top layers of mud. I encounted a place where a Tejon guide (un-named!) went off the day prior and had to be winched out. He was lucky...

Nevertheless a great hunt and hope to be back again.

A few pics included...

This is the shallow stuff...

354049325.jpg

The creek I learned to highly dislike...after 3.5 hours and ~60 crossings...

Amazing what you'll find up there though. This is a little "casa" that is privately owned (over on the "dry" side"). I think the guy once owned the Desert Hunt club and did a swap out with the ranch of some sort. The pictures don't do it justice...or show the shop, etc. Awesome...

Great report guys, I have hunted Tejon 5 times, I cant get enough of the place. Whoever plans on going up there make sure your rigs are capable, first time I went, all i kept hearing about was this slick mud, I could say my but puckered a few times, it so slippery two people were able to push my truck away from the cliff. Now i always have a set of chains in the truck that's even with having mud terrains. Beautiful country, feels like California 200 years ago.

SERIOUS driving...

Saw the ranch from the SE corner of Del Gato Montes to the NW corner of Tunis creek. Not all of it intentional by the way.

Great place...can't wait to get back--and everyone up there was really courteous and helpful as well. Would like to get up there at the end of Feb. for the next POR but there's that dang $$$ issue.

Too much month at the end of the money...

You guys said it all - amazing country, crazy roads, etc. Definitely needed the chains - thank God I put them in. My truck was head to toe mud - took me 45 mins with a power washer to get it all off. We got a little lost coming out on Sunday, but got to see some great landscape. I can't wait to get back there - it is truly hunting. If you pull a pig out of there with a bow and arrow, you have something to brag about. I know some of it is being at the right place at the right time, but those pigs are smart and elusive. Trying to get back in April, but will set my sights on the archery POR in June.
