I think hunting will be allowed for many, many years. However, I don't think it will be the same "affordable" hunts as now, and probably only on the North side.

Will it last forever? Heck no, nothing ever does.

Private property, private business... the dollar rules, and in the current economy a monster like Tejon Ranch Company needs to do something to feed itself. Development, especially for the "Haves", is a sure-fire moneymaker.

Is the Tejon Ranch Company greedy? Are they callous to the desires of the public and to the needs of nature?

Yeah. Inasmuch as any corporation can be "greedy". It exists to build the bottom line. Nothing else. And the concerns of the public mean nothing to a corporation... a non-sentient entity that feels neither joy nor pain. Surely there are some individuals, stockholders, executives, and many "foot-soldiers" who hate to see these changes as much as many of us do. But they are not the corporation. And sentiment simply doesn't make money... selling land and building houses does.

The agreements with the State and the major enviro-groups are olive branches. They're the only way to get the development done without facing huge and expensive lawsuits. The speculation about what will happen to the undeveloped property... hunting, public access, etc.... that's all just speculation at this point. For now, they're providing hush-money to keep the "huggers" off their backs as they lay out the golf courses and mini-estates. We'll see, of course, if the pay-off holds. Or will the environmental organizations see a cash cow to be milked again and again? It's not over, that is a safe bet.

But the changes are inevitable. The ranch will change. Development will come. Like it or not, money rules our world, and a corporation like Tejon Ranch Company has to make more and more to exist and grow. And unless you are a stockholder, you really have no say in how they do it.

It's the nature of business... not the business of nature.
