I am interested in doing some hog hunting at Tejon Ranch. I know of the POR. I have also heard of a hunt thrown by Jim Mathews that cost $500 that includes food and lodging. Where might I get more info. regarding this hunt?

QBN,

Best bet is to call the ranch. You can reach Don Geivet at 661-663-4208. I can't remember Barbara's number off-hand right now, but if you call Don you'll probably get passed over to Barbara.

You can also try to touch base with Jim Matthews at (I think this is still right) olwriter@aol.com.

Good luck.

We talked to Barbara and Don at Raahauge's shooting fair last weekend. Boy do they like us JHP'ers. Anyway they said that before their deer/elk/antelope seasons start in August, we can book a JHP group hunt (same prices as Pig o Rama), as long as we have a minimun of 10 hunters.
So right now were looking at the weekend of July 18 or July 25th. We've got 4-5 people lined up so far, and we'll post it once we get the date firmed up.
But like I said they really like JHP, and they made it sound like anytime during their pig season they'll open up the ranch for us if we bring at least 10 hunters. :JHP rocks:

This may not meet the needs of those who want a hunt this summer, but there is a JHP group hunt scheduled at Tejon for next May.
JHP Hog Hunt . Applications for this hunt will be available in October.

The folks at Tejon are definitely thrilled with our interest, since we put over 30 hunters on site for the March POR, and I'm not sure how many were there for the June hunt.

Is it necessary to have a hunter ed card when hunting on a ranch in california?

You have to have proof of hunter education to get a CA license, but a license from any other state that requires hunter ed is sufficient.

The Tejon Ranch hog hunts are not preserve hunts, and require state license and tags.

there is an archery only big pig contest on the 27th-29th of this month. cost is only $300 bucks for the entire 3 days of hunting the tejon ranch. it's like the por, just archery only. still not too late to sign up. i'll be there. good luck.

Just my humble opinion:

Go ahead and book a private guided hunt for $650 - at least for the first trip out there. It's worth every penny and could be most beneficial for future hunts on your own like POR's, etc.

They drive you around, feed you, house you, and they will answer every question you have have about the ranch, hogs, or hunting in general.

Don & his guides are just super folks.
